Sherele Moody (Femicide Research... & @ShereleMoody On Saturday, Mitchell Hopkins, 30, attacked his mother (allegedly) at her home in Redfern, NSW. Lauren Hopkins was taken to hospital in critical condition. She has died, NSW Police confirmed a short time ago. The 47-year-old is the 29th Australian woman killed this year and the 132nd woman killed since January 1, 2024. Her death means we have lost FOUR women to violence in seven days. Almost all the women killed this year have been erased by violent men and most in the domestic violence setting. So here we are again. Fucking again. If women were killing men at this rate, the country would be up in arms. If sharks were killing Australians at this rate, they'd be culled. If dingoes were killing Australians at this rate, there'd be 10 million forms of new policy, and billions of dollars being committed to ending their violence. And Anthony Albanese would be fronting media and calling for all stops to be pulled out to save lives. But we're just women. We don't matter.

On Friday, the young woman in the image died by suicide. Her name is Virginia Guiffre. She was a fierce warrior for those of us who survived rape or sexual assault - and for those who could never overcome the pain of this trauma. Virginia was raped and trafficked by Jeffrey Epstein. She was a teenager when Epstein and his co-accused Ghislaine Maxwell kept Virginia 'on call for sexual purposes' 'lending' her to powerful men. One being Prince Andrew. "This is not some sordid sex story. This is a story of being trafficked. This is a story of abuse and this is a story of your guys' royalty," she told BBC Panorama in 2019. Three years after that interview - in 2022 - Virginia settled a civil case against the prince. He never went to trial. The prince continually denied it but Virginia said: "He knows what happened. I know what happened. And there's only one of us telling the truth." The link between suicide, self-harm and sexual violence is rarely talked about - and yet thousands of women experience this daily in Australia. One-third of women who survive rape and /or sexual assault contemplate suicide while 13% will try to end their own lives. Virginia spent many years advocating for - and championing - victims of sexual violence. 'Her courage pushed me to fight harder, and her strength was awe-inspiring," lawyer Sigrid McCawley said. Virginia lived on a farm in Western Australia and was mum to three children. 'Despite all the adversity she faced in her life, she shone so bright. @ShereleMoody Eight women killed in 10 days. 24 women killed in under just under five months. 127 women killed in just under 17 months. Yesterday, a 46-year-old woman tried to stop a fight in Yarrawonga, Victoria. A man involved in that fight ran her over with his car. He left the scene. She could not be saved. She is the 24th Australian woman killed this year. The man is in police custody. It's not yet known if he is known to the woman. It's beyond devastating to see woman after woman killed and yet the apathy is not changing. We can't even get Anthony Albanese and Peter Dutton to speak their names during an election campaign - the time when they need women's votes the most.
