#Selectric
Oops.

I think I just agreed to put my heaviest typewriter* on my back and pedal it over to the typewriter repair shop for new ribbon.

*a 1910 Royal Tariff, only about 3/4 the weight of an IBM Selectric thank god

Admittedly I’m biased because I computer for a living, but “typing” (on an ancient IBM Selectric, even!) was by far the most useful class I ever took in high school

I’m old & our school still taught typing on Selectric typewriters. They switched to computers when my brother came through.

Also! Three years of technical drawing with paper, pencil and t-squares. They moved to computers and CAD when my brother came through lol

(The hand drawing was my fave tho 🤷🏻‍♀️)

I learned to type on an IBM Selectric. It shows.

I still sometimes use the double space bc I am old and learned to type on an IBM selectric & the legal field used the double space for decades.

Yeah, they like to call themselves by weird identifiers, which isn't how Americans refer to themselves. 😂

Listen closely, because I am only saying it once....

I learned to type on an IBM Selectric II.

There are TWO (2) spaces after a period you mother fudgers...

This is the hill I will die on.

Math and physics papers were another whole level of pain back then. Swapping type heads over and over again on an IBM Selectric in order to get an equation on the page and having to start over if you messed something up.

"Do you want Red or Brown switches? Anodized aluminum case? What size? 110% or 96% or 75%? Maybe an Alice layout? What about--" i swear to god the last keyboard i purchased was a full-ass motorized IBM Selectric II typewriter i don't know what ANY of that shit means

If you think it's hard on a laptop, try it with an IBM Selectric!

Climate activists have been arguing for years that the energy transition was not only crisis, but an opportunity.

Looks like they were right all along and the IBM Selectric vendors were wrong.

“producer and writer Stephen Cannell’s signature end-credit logo—shown here and familiar to anyone who watched TV during the 1980s—depicted Cannell typing on his Selectric. Cannell was the creator of popular ’80s shows like The Rockford Files and The A-Team.” web.archive.org/web/20121003...

IBM Selectric typewriters have appeared in countless movies and TV shows, but no individual machine will ever be seen as many times as Stephen J. Cannell’s. www.youtube.com/watch?v=PV3s...

IBM Selectric typewriter.

Typed on an IBM Selectric that let me correct errors. Videos from a Korean-owned place that had started out a drycleaners with videos on the side. No recording off the radio: copyright violation.

They missed waiting for Sunday low rates to call long distance, and looking for a pay phone.

Looks like you can't do photos through DM, (which is honestly good design on Bluesky's part). Photos below

You know what? I have a Letter Gothic typeball from a Selectric that I bought to turn into a keyboard a few years back.

It's yours for free if you want it, just let me know how to get it to you.

Like, a type ball? Or the whole Selectric?

I'm sure you can get a typeball on Ebay for not a lot.

Selectrics are probably more expensive but I'm guessing not outrageously priced.

kay that officially seals it. I am an old.

That's a dice from the Selectric Dungeons & Dragons game. You throw this dice, and then someone must tie an ink ribbon around his head and write the character which shows at the top, while chanting 'IBM'.

Selectric golfball! 🥰

I'd been using a Selectric before going to a dedicated word processing computer (CPT 8000), so no problem there.

We did not feel like carrying over the Selectric, but this still scores pretty high as an era-appropriate clip art reference.
