(3/3) I also hope the educational aims of #SeaWeek incorporate many Indigenous practices, knowledges, and cosmologies. Ocean stewardship cannot be colonialist. Colonialism is antithetical to the well-being of the ocean and every living being in/near it.

It's #NZ #SeaWeek 🌊 To celebrate, I'm sharing my feature for @snexplores.bsky.social on restoring giant kelp forests in Wellington. It's a community effort helmed by Love Rimurimu & involves scientists + a team of "kelpers" — volunteer divers, kids, and teens 🧪 🌏

Restoring giant underwater forests, one blade at a time
Giant kelp are at risk due to climate change and human activities. In New Zealand, a community effort is rebuilding these underwater algal forests.

(1/3) Today is day #1 of #SeaWeek. #SeaWeek (March 2 to 10) celebrates the world's oceans. It asserts the importance of oceanscapes to the health of the planet and every living being on it. Nothing many Indigenous ocean stewards weren't already doing and saying.

(2/3) Perhaps if certain people listened to Indigenous folks/folx in the first place, #SeaWeek wouldn't (in part) be code for: "Colonial capitalism fucked our planet over, so let's salvage what's left, kids!"

I like the music of Salmon, but I don't care for the fish as a delicacy.
Conversely, I love me some tuna (rolled up in seaweek or out of a can) but Hot Tuna's music kind of bores me.

Gone fishing.
Sadly, no “…and away…” for this little one. Such is nature.
