Do we morally owe #taxes?

The case against paying taxes is stronger than you might think, but the best reason to pay may be humility: it’s the surest way to treat fellow citizens fairly.

Philosophers from Socrates to Locke debate it: buff.ly/em3ZNVQ
Do you have a moral duty to pay taxes?
Many Americans are fretting over paying their taxes. A philosopher says the moral question isn’t as much about a duty toward the government, but being fair to fellow tax-paying citizens.

This one rules too. The thesis, as far as I can tell, is that our inheritance from people like Socrates is primarily a conservative project. Think Alan Bloom but the texts have all been googled, not read.

Sure he gets that. And he also sometimes lets slip a grudging admiration for his arch-enemies (Socrates, Paul, & co): remarkable men in their way who expanded the human imagination, revaluated all values in a way that the desiccated ‘last man’ of late Christianity..

relegate it to the same importance as Marcus Aurelius, Plato, Aristotle, Socrates, Seneca, Epictetus, Confucius, Laozi, Vashubandu and so many others that have imparted wisdom.

It's time. It really is. Humanity is growing up and it's time for us to act like adults rather than subservient children.

I hope Professor Wilson does not mind too much that these days she seems to be known mostly for translating Homer, almost to the exclusion of everything else she has done and published in her career. Recently read her book on the Death of Socrates and it was very wide-ranging and interesting.
