Let’s learn about sloths this morning at #SICB2023

Two toed and three toed sloths split in evolutionary time a LONG time ago, I missed the number, but I believe it was over 20MYA.

2 toed sloths like to hang and go sideways, whereas 3 toed sloths spend more time going up &down

I was so impressed at how readily these snakes cooperated!! All Joshua had to do is hold up a stick with some foliage and they were like “oh hell yeah I gotta get up there”.

Such cool work!!

Are the cephalopod people at #SICB2023 planning to gather at all? I’m not sure who all’s here, @CarrieOcto @Alissa_Ganley @UCSB_OakleyLab @MicheleNishigu1 ?

HANG ON just learned from @sticky_morph that sea urchins use glue to stick to stuff 🤯

They secrete glue, then secrete an enzyme to break that bond to let go, & leave “little footprints” behind. I had always assumed it was suction cups! They’re able to do this so fast.

First-ever talk. So exciting to be at a point in your research where you can tell people about it. Feeling grateful ! 🧽🧽🦠

Oh boy, can't wait to go to my first in-person @SICB_ since 2020, #SICB2023 is gonna be so much fun, just gonna get on my Southwest flight in a couple days and...

If you’re really tiny, but you want to move fast, it’s tough.

@DrKateFeller is looking at how spring-loaded appendages work to make this move FAST.

Lots of animals have something like a crossbow to make that spring loaded action, leafhoppers, shrimp, locusts, etc.

Just submitted my @SICB_ abstract for #SICB2023 Come learn about the Effects of Northern Snakehead mucus and scales in terrestrial friction during terrestrial locomotion! This project was one of my recent and awesome undergrads, Francis Chilel-Lopez

Fun fact, chameleon’s shooting out their tongues? We call that “ballistic tongue projection”

Last talk of the day from Nicole Schneider at #SICB2023 looking at prey capture in Jackson chameleons!

Learned that my buddy Marc the chameleon rarely does a full ballistic projection

Cephalopod gathering at #SICB2023, tmrw 6pm, gather in the lobby. We'll go from there to Shiners (where there's open air for covid safety).

Gearing up for the #SICB2023 meetings … first up is the #shark #denticle #multiverse! Talks by @dfbvaz and Tess Avery will describe remarkable changes in denticles during ontogeny in the Portuguese dogfish, accompanied by lots of variation around the body @SICB_ @SICB_DCB_DVM

I love #SICB2023 because you get talks like "Coral reefs are affected by climate change: here are 5 scientists tackling this", "Diatoms make sludge that prevents shoreline erosion", "This bug *fucks*", & "I scared a bunch of forest critters, here watch the video!" all in one day

Sea star locomotion is so impressive. There can be hundreds of feet to coordinate.

Theo Po is looking at this.

Sometimes they sorta jump. A little OOMPH to move themselves forward. It’s called a bouncing gait.

But they don’t have a brain so how do they coordinate?

I'm cheating a lil for #PhycologyFriday bc I actually presented my poster on Wednesday, but I'm having such a good time at #SICB2023 and I've gotten to talk about kelp and biology and education/outreach/comm with so many people 😁🌊🌱

The #shark #denticle #multiverse is vast, and @MarBioMoll will present at #SICB2023 on ontogenetic changes in skin denticles in leopard sharks. So much variation and so few previous studies of denticle ontogeny @SICB_ @SICB_DCB_DVM

Ostracods are small marine crustaceans. They’re very bioluminescent & shoot light in mucous blobs.

Learning more from @toddkoakley’s talk at #SICB2023

Like fireflies, males use light to attract a mate. The patterns are different between species so females know who to pursue!

Further experiments showed that these swaying motions also conceal conspicuous movements like hunting and grooming.

Super cool talk!!

Armfield looked at the evolution of very large gapes in snakes. Proposes that large gape feeding evolved several times. Jaw muscles do more stabilizing than crushing.

NOPE. Fish that eat other fish look totally different from each other.

Ok so what can we use? Jojo proposes we use HOW they chase their prey. Do they chase them down? Hide and strike? Sift through sand?

This is a good predictor of skull shape!
