Then add to that factors like race, ethnicity, culture, class, gender, level of education by parents... it makes a huge difference.
Professionals owe parents education (hermeneutical justice basically). Sometimes lived experience solidarity is all parents can take. IYKYK..

If we consciously consider autism, intellectual disability, neurology, speech apraxia, and sensory processing we get a much better understanding of needs. This means we can be better at supporting needs.

I wish for the thinking around autism to be more precise in spelling out for parents co-occurring cognitive, speech, and sensory issues. Ditto neurological.

Precision in knowledge emancipates parents, improving their advocacy and outcomes thinking, helping their children

Eldest has sensory sensitivity leading to anxiety & stress

School offers some adjustments - but he can't access them as he hates comments/ bullying

He won't wear any ear loops/ eardefenders, have tinted glasses to reduce light etc because anything different makes him a target

Emptying my head onto paper - the good, the bad, the random, the real - is how I stay upright, or at least how I get back up faster when life knocks me down.
Whether it's a to-do, a memory, something the kids said, or just how I'm feeling, it all lands here first.

@libdems.org.uk #LDConf I'm watching online from beautiful East Devon. Question, are we able to speak on a motion online, I did fill out a card but it's not terribly clear. I wish I could, 3 mins on F25 from the perspective of a #SENDPARENT

Life is one battle after another for SEN families. Between fighting for diagnosis, support, healthcare, school needs being met, respite & everything else, it’s relentless. Im 13+ years in & can confirm that caring for my children is the easy part 😔 #SEND #SENDPARENT #EHCP #PersonalBudget

Roof - culture change
We owe late Ruth Perry to change culture regarding Ofsted fear. We owe countless SEND children who completed suicides to work on bullying etc. Lives over grades. Lives over jobs.

Walls - staffing
Exhausted. Teachers, EdPsychs, LA SEND teams, support charities etc.

Staffbneed more SEND training, better employment conditions, retention strategies agreed with unions, more PPA / CPD / supervision time. Staff are Golden Geese.

Walls - curriculum. Whilst Fronted Adverbials are a thing for 7 yr olds teachers will be losing battles. They need more freedom with the curriculum as they're now scared of Ofsted. Not everything measured counts, not all that counts can be measured.

Walls - family lived experience p2
As a SEND parent I have experienced parent blame and each time the professionals were completely wrong. Sorry doesn't fix it.
Unfunded system isn't a parent's problem any more than potholes are your car's problem

Walls - family lived experience must be central.
If we believe that it is child first and always then (unless safeguarding), our parents' voice must be central alongside children's own voices. I know my children far better than any professional ever will

Foundation - current policy in theory gives us rights and yet we regularly end up at tribunals. Tighten up the policy keeping family at the centre, implement consistently across the country, conduct more frequent funding reviews.

As a SEND parent, Trainee EP, & former central gov policy implementation manager, here is my SEND house:
Foundation -> fully funded consistently implemented policy
Walls -> family lived experience, curriculum, staff training, staff retention
Roof -> culture change

SEND parents and SEND activists in England, did you contribute to the Education Select committee / DfE "solutions to SEND crisis" consultation? It closed on Thursday.

Besides the obvious more funding what are your thoughts?

Today was a day of two halves...eldest had a meltdown due to unexpected change of plans and lots of being prodded (hospital visit!). Horrible for them. Then lovely festive Afternoon Tea with my husband when they were happily back at school.

Eldest has just had a meltdown and had to be picked up early from the place they love being on a Saturday morning because they haven't been able to understand the interpersonal stuff going on there. Makes me very sad for them and triggers me from my teen years. #SENDparent #autism #adhd #SENDsky

I agree - it is written to put parents off applying.

Otherwise, it’s ’We have 5 skilled and experienced TAs / our SENDCO would be happy to meet and discuss your child’s needs’… etc

No #SENDparent wants to make their child the ‘test case’ that forces a school into better working practices.
