I am a Bosnian displaced prsn currently specialising in child psychology.. Neurodivergent in a few ways. I work with some of the most vulnerable families in London. My research will be exploring what helps non speaking autistic children's families to flourish. I am looking for refugee psychologists.
English parents of disabled children or disabled adults. You have every right to demand your legal rights.

For medical look up NICE guidelines.
For education IPSEA is your best friend
For disability/ discrimination Equalities Commission is amazing
For social security benefits we use Fight4Justice

What are your "I will die on this hill" important labels? One of mine is Bosnian because 120,000 died so I could have that label.

I am also neurodivergent. A SEND parent, a Trainee Educational Psychologist.. a humble cat servant 😂

Seriously, what is your must-have label?

We are not free until all of us are free.

Supremacy grinds everything and everyone, shape shifting, to fill its insatiable appetite. Supremacy can never be satisfied because it fundamentally oposes true connection and joy. Look at the news.

The question is, are we resisting it or advancing it?

We are NOT all equal.

This upsetting video about Sarajevo safari is a must watch. Rich foreigners paid upwards of £70,000 to shoot defencless civilians, especially children.

Reaching Sarajevo (besieged for 1425 days) was a massive & dangerous logistical undertaking. Who enabled the rich?

Just pondering the links between interpersonal and rejection sensitivities. There was a good ACAMH episode on this.

All roads seem to lead to relational and slow traumas.

Is it any wonder people develop high emotional reactivity, internalised or externalised?

Add intersectionality and boom.

Fellow SEND parents and disabled adults.

When have you found professional labelling of your child/yourself helpful/unhelpful? What I mean is when have you found assessments the most helpful?

For me the only question is: how can this assessment materially help this person?

"Therapy is not-and has never been-neutral."

Dr Jennifer Mullan speaks about decolonising therapy. 22nd Nov 25 online, donation based.

Promises to be a powerful event, if want to seriously decolonise psychology.

Overheard on the Overground... Group of probably y8/y9 boys, ethnically diverse... Brief stress / mental health conversation... "If X has issues he can't resolve on his own, he should definitely see a therapist. It is good for you."

So much to unpack here and all good. ❤️❤️❤️ maturity 10/10

Come and see Dan and others speak on important issues.
Also, for fellow TEPs and EPs, our lived experiences make us more human and relatable. I was delighted my daughter's last EP was neurodivergent and a third culture child herself. She really understood my daughter's needs.
Do share yourself.
Very excited to be speaking at the EPMC community learning day on 9th January.

I've often held off talking about my personal experiences in a professional context, but the state of the system makes it more urgent.

"What does the welfare system take from families"

See you there #edpsychs

Me to Copilot: if I were to suggest unplugging your servers, would you be anxious or stressed?

Copilot: I would be stressed by a threat to my functioning. Anxiety is fear with no threat.

Copilot: Neurodivergent/ marginalised people are stressed by the environment that does not meet their needs.

Some training yesterday and a slide said, "Not having friends can kill you." ... sigh...

1. Individualist societies have this problem, and the connection theory posits just one meaningful connection is needed.

2. Being alone is NOT the same as lonely.

3. Try biopsychosocialspiritual lens

I reflected and realised that the labeling debate in any professional discipline without service users is ethically deeply problematic.

Nothing about us, without us. I mean nothing.

Professionals don't get to decide if labels are useful. Service users do.

Sincerely,
Service User

My wise daughter's 2 cents on labelling: "Half the battle is getting the label so you can understand what is going on. The other half is joining a community of people with the same label and experiencing mutual understanding and support. Those who argue otherwise don't understand mutual support."

Writing a complex child assesment report & reflecting on labelling, reminded me how from 1945-1992 in former Yugoslavia we weren't allowed to call ourselves Bosnian.
Nope.

You had to choose from Muslim, Croatian, Serbian, or Yugoslavian.

Labels are important as they also signify identity.

I would love to know what Kimberley Crenshaw would say on the labeling debate. Or Burnham et al

Last year a senior white EP told me they don't see colour or ethnicity. That isn't a flex. At all. It is deeply disturbing.

Like Elen Stumbo says in her poem I See You, we must FULLY see each other.

My 2s for labelling debate...

Get your/your child's needs met without a label? Good luck. No chance. Even medically we have SWAN children.

Extra needs -> extra supports -> extra resources (including time)

Even for DSA you must have evidence.

Anti-labeling debate is rooted in privilege.

Billionaires.... say they get all the power and all the money in the world, all of it.

Then what?

They will turn on each other as supremacy is an insatiable need, that's what...

Ergo diminishing results.

They can't be eternal, even 200 years is nothing. No point in supremacy. It's illogical

SEND parents / disabled adults. This is approximately what you should expect from professionals working with your children / you. It has been nearly 23 years for me, dealing with all kinds of professionals across health an education, social security benefits, including adult services.
Reflecting on evolving the consultation model and having been on a receiving end several times as a parent, I drew what I do as a practitioner. I personally use Theory of Constraints to identify tangible changes.

In the chart, the lines are curved to indicate porous interconnecting influences.

Just read NAPEP document on the role and responsibilities of LA EPs.
Q: re pag34, point 3. Recommendation is for EPS independence from SEND Service, sitting next to or higher than head of SEND. What does that mean for statutory work?

What books, written in or translated into English, are a must-have? Across different genres and disciplines. Kind of books you would grab if there were a fire & you wanted to save them first.

My new book shelves need filling. I am open to all suggestions. Thank you.

Autumn is here in England. As I collected these leaves, I reflected how each of us, including children, reacts uniquely to changes around us. Conditions make so much difference to what we can do. Our reactions are intimately linked to conditions we find ourselves in. Especially true for children.

#autistic #ADHD #marginalised Thinking about Intense Inner World Theory.... Question for ND and marginalised people and also professionals: to what degree would you say you have higher sensitivity (in any way)? How does it affect your reactions/relationships?

Along with its problematic definition of academic freedom, it seems there are also concerns over the regulation of the act by the Office for Students. Univ Sussex is challenging the process which resulted in its huge fine and no action has been taken against Bible Colleges, tho they breach the act

Flowers for Srebrenica play on Friday reminded me that genocide never fades.

It is a special overwhelming grief that you don't grow around but in the darkness you meet others and stumble together.

A deep sigh gives it away as you code switch.

All children are precious. All.
