#RestAreaFire goes international! The I-40/Old Rt. 66 wild fire east of Amarillo made news in UK's "Daily Mail" as the paper blared "entire town evac'd." Um...right. Alanreed, TX, has a pop. of maybe 16-20 & was once named "Gouge Eye". Calling it a town is a sensationalist stretch. #wildfire

#WindmillFire said to be 8,000 ac. NASA FIRMS suggests acreage might be higher. It's ~13 mi. & running. #RestAreaFire @AlanReed had major expansion. Always use NASA FIRMS data cautiously. "False positives" are common. It's good for general perspective but not for precise accuracy. #wildfire

#RestAreaFire has McLean, TX, in its sights moving 3-5 MPH. NWS says McLean has evac notices. NASA FIRMS seems to show fire 2 mi.W of McClean. McClean has a pop. of around 600-700 and quite a Rt. 66 history. See:
