Although I realised too late they're missing a crucial model description slide🤦, I'll add it it soon. But it's PyPSA-Eur, all energy sectors, net-zero CO2 emissions, default of 200 MtCO2/a sequestration.

What is the value of biomass 🥬 in future energy systems 🔌💡💨😎?

TL;DR: it's more important to provide renewable carbon than energy, thus saving on expensive direct air capture

Featuring PyPSA-Eur with biomass extensions and some fun near-optimal analysis!
🚨 New Article and Policy Brief in Nature Energy 🚨

📄We examine the value of biomass in the European energy system and its interplay with other technologies under stringent emissions scenarios.

The model linked above doesn't consider the grid, but our proper European model PyPSA-Eur has connection costs that vary depending on distance from coast (around 2-3000 €/MW/km).

I compared nuclear LCOE to total system cost for renewables (including storage) which I think is fair.
November 10, 2024 at 2:14 PM
Definitely! We are testing this in the bigger, more complex European model PyPSA-Eur, but kept things simple (and understandable) for the short impulse paper 😀

@nworbmot Hi! I've been looking through PyPSA models lately and started wondering if anyone has yet used e.g. the PyPSA-Eur model to assess the materials requirements for European sustainability transition? Are you aware of such projects?
