#Microlabels
I truly love how comfortable how many people are claiming queer microlabels for themselves, its magical how may different ways we have to describe ourselves

I also need some people to understand that it's fine to be cis & straight without 100% buying into gender binaries. That's just feminism

Interacting with the queer community exclusively online will lead you to believe that everyone thinks in an Online Queer Discourse manner but no actually people are more concerned with things that aren't microlabels and picking apart everything you say.

or yknow. we could scour the internet for the perfect terms/microlabels for two ocs that will not be seen in my comic that is not out yet for a while.

yea thats more important
ugh ok yeah no our body is saying sleep, our pointer finger is seizing up lmao

uhh lemme me queer. if you like your microlabels, you can keep em

This is a lamentable thing about the online politics-as-hobby sphere: people look for identity, and they find it in ideology. It consumes you. You start defining yourself with arcane microlabels (see: political compass, 8values, basically every "political ideology" quiz out there)

also i'm discovering new microlabels that desrcibe the way i've experienced sexuality p much al my life...... it's exciting and also strange....!!!! i would've never imagined anyone else viewed sex like i do....... waaah....

i really think describing a quote "reverse misgendering kink" unquote is in fact overly specific and i am blaming microlabels

Day 28: asexual

An asexual individual is someone who experiences no sexual attraction towards others. This doesn't prevent them from feeling romantic attraction or from getting aroused. There are plenty of microlabels under the ace umbrella, as the experience varies greatly from person to person.

strict categories that we can sort people into. Bisexuality is just used as an "oopsie this one doesn't fit the boxes" category, which is why people have creating increasing numbers of bisexual microlabels. But we shouldn't be doing it in the first place. We shouldn't be categorizing our sexuality.

don't get me twisted it's all been absolutely completely worth it but my reasons are a lot deeper than fufufu i "get to" put marginalized identity microlabels in my bio, that and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee

Hmm, my experience has been more "aces took the conversation out of public social media spaces because of the constant ~ace discourse~, mocking of microlabels, and drive by term-search harassment" (I feel like I had it mild but I had "kys" replies and K-pop gifs flooding my mentions more than once)
November 4, 2025 at 5:45 PM
I think that's how microlabels should work, but I've mostly seen people getting bogged down in the "but do I fit this microlabel exactly?" I think part of why the ace comunity fell apart is that it got so focused on individual identities over literally anything else.

To me, I kind of think microlabels can be a solution to that problem rather than the problem, even if there aren't really necessarily any I vibe with myself- ideally they make explicit the idea of different experiences in coalition and counter that tendency of "oh you're not X enough because Y"?
November 4, 2025 at 5:29 PM
I don't want to pick on microlabels because identities are valid but I think I need to pick on microlabels a little because they're getting so specific they're centering the conversation on "can I still call myself x if I y?" instead of "how do I interact with people in a community?"

any sufficiently complex discussions about the racchristian trinity are indistinguishable on pluralpedia articles on microlabels

Chou fleur, chou rouge, brocolis, chou de Bruxelles, tout ça c'est de la moutarde et puis c'est tout, y a pas a inventer des microlabels parce que t'aurais une coupe de cheveux différente.

I always find it interesting that people on here hate tumblr for microlabels and telling others certain classes of people are real and deserve to have their needs met('validity politics') and not for spawning the ace exclusionist movement or trying to redefine bisexuality. I wonder why?
November 1, 2025 at 7:52 AM
They aren't HATEFUL but I don't trust them to be Normal about me

I messed around with lots of niche microlabels for a while. The only one I still use is nebularomantic (unable to discern romantic attraction due to neurodivergence)

Oh well. I'm an awesome butchy tboy lesbian now and I'm happy w it
October 29, 2025 at 12:08 AM
not quite my concern, no. and also i wouldn't consider transsexual vs transgender to be microlabels anyway
October 28, 2025 at 7:28 PM
my cynicism and suspicion about microlabels is definitely a suspicion of the creeping of online into the actual. what starts as useful shorthands become the thing itself, until identity is what you say you are and not what you do. like something important is lost in that semiotic movement.
October 28, 2025 at 6:15 PM
the very recent trend of pathologising every aspect of one's personality into a matrix of microlabels and acronyms is part of the specifically american version of bourgeois liberalism that sees every niche as a commercial opportunity, and promotes the creation of new niches as new markets.

So I definitely do wish there was a more concrete example of what we're talking about here

I occasionally get into researching microlabels as i find they can help me understand myself more clearly

But I really don't really use them to describe myself to others cuz who should really care
October 28, 2025 at 7:44 AM
that's actually kinda exactly what i mean yeah! like, having any of these concepts as Something at All was a challenge in the first place, but now everyone wants their 139408517834590234509149085 microlabels and like what are we doing here ya know
