Came up the valley to the house on #MarketSt for a visit with my Mom, we ordered Dominos for lunch, her great grandkids walked around the backyard with her looking at stuff. Lunch is over and it’s getting time to head back home.

The Wave washed over South Kensington years ago, but the onetime hub of light industry continues to see new construction and redevelopment. This attractive and attractively priced trinity falls into that latter category.

1920? 1790 is probably a more accurate construction date for the old mill houses that were stitched together to create this one-of-a-kind residence near Gulph Mills. open.substack.com/pub/marketst...

Im not saying Trump is trying to crash the marketst—though some of his biggest backers want just that.

But he's pursuing a plan intended to shock the global economy and spread mass pain so he can bully our allies, and he could absolutely crash the market if he's outplayed by Xi, which ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ .
Why the plan behind Trump's Tyranny By Trade War matters
It ties everything together—including why we keep underestimating Trump.

Hah. Just highlighting category distinctions. Of course MarketSt retail has been unique—if also typical for mid to large sized U.S. cities thru 20thC to date (dependent on foot-traffic). But it’s totally ill-suited for the sprawling shopping mall set-up. Stonestown was the first of that type in SF.
December 12, 2024 at 1:22 AM
PS: MarketSt retailers such as the Emporium (RIP), benefitted from classic “foot-traffic/urban commercial district” model. Not sure if or how long you’ve lived in SF? Its my hometown. My fam experienced the respective evolutions of both retail locales — MarketSt/UnionSq vs Stonestown — in Real Time.
December 12, 2024 at 1:06 AM
Um, respectfully disagree. MarketSt in SF has not ever been ideal locale for post-WWII shopping malls. The is abundant historic + contemporary research on how/why retail shopping malls proliferated in mid-‘50s through mid-‘80s window, largely tied to suburbanization + parking. Stonestown was THAT.
