I get asked a lot (by Nepalis abroad, mainly) how to learn Nepali. Susmita’s book is where I tell everyone to start. The good news is its new edition is now available at Mandala Books on Kantipath. I believe it can be shipped internationally. (I’ll see if I can find a link).

I had the best weekend. I got to meet Manjul Dai and my friend Susmita, who gave me the Nepali language, and literature from around the world (Garcia Lorca, Nazim Hikmet!), and a lot of love when I was starting out as a young writer. ❤️

Manjul is a well known Indian political cartoonist. The cartoon shown here is of India’s Prime Minister with a cage of parrots marked ‘institutions’. He is releasing caged butterflies from a large can. This is a reference to the vote-stealing scandal currently breaking.

"Adaptability has perhaps always been Asha’s biggest plus point, apart from her voice. It comes from being aware of what life has to offer."

MUMBAI: India, said Fields medallist Manjul Bhargava, must fall in love with mathematics again. Not as a "drudgery of formulae" but as an act of "exploration".Bhargava, Canadian by nationality but of Indian origin, believes classrooms need an overhaul-"experimental, playful," he said, with teachers "trained" to spark curiosity. Speaking to TOI on the sidelines of the launch of the Lodha Mathematical Sciences Institute (LMSI), he added: "I'm happy with the new textbooks and the changes brought in them. But they will only show impact in a few years."On the scientific advisory council of LMSI, Bhargava will lead sessions on arithmetic statistics, its new developments, and future directions.

Who is Manjul Bhargava? The Indian-origin math genius nurtured by Harvard, mentored at Princeton – Times of India
At first glance, Manjul Bhargava’s story reads like that of many Indian-origin overachievers in the academic world. But look closer, and his journey reveals a rare blend of intellectual brilliance, deep cultural grounding, and boundary-breaking curiosity. From mastering high school mathematics by the age of 14 to winning the Fields Medal, the most prestigious prize in mathematics, Bhargava has followed an educational path that is both elite and deeply personal.

Books I read in #July 📚

Some of these were absolutely amazing! Others were alright and some I had to throw away every 20 mins because the protagonists couldn't stop being twee even if their lives depended on it.

"...I'm having difficulty identifying three additional mathematicians whose names begin with M and who were definitively born in 1975 or later. This reflects both the specificity of your criteria and the fact that mathematicians born since 1975 are still relatively early in their careers"

good news!

En regardant un article de Manjul Bhargava, Arul Shankar et Jacob Tsimerman, je tombe sur cette valeur.
Je suis partagé entre la joie de savoir la calculer et le dégoût devant cette formule (pourtant peu compliquée).
