Anyway Filipino American fun fact of the day: Filipinos were the first Asians to settle in the Americas. The Manilamen of Louisiana, made of deserters and escaped slaves.

In "A Bigfoot Homecoming," Nathaniel Francisco Abayon Villanueva is descended from Louisiana's Manilamen who jumped ship from Spanish galleons in the 18th century. His character is inspired by Filipino friends.

These "Manilamen" fished and shrimped, saw the transition from Mexico to the US, and survived as a community into the 20th century when a hurricane(s) destroyed Saint Malo.
