pp. 154–155 Chapter 3 “The Catastrophe Lying in Wait” Prior to reciting the poem, Kashūrah spoke of 1948. He related that his people had slept in the fields out of fear of the Jews, and recalled…[Jewish] soldiers murdered some of the shepherds and took their flocks. "Is this what Allah commanded? To steal? To rob?" he asked. Kashūrah and his companions fled, hiding in the mountains and ravines.… I will [examine] a powerful poem Kashūrah declaimed at the circumcision ceremony that summer, not far from Tel Sheva. Tel Sheva, the first Bedouin settlement established in the Negev, lies 3 km east of Beersheba. [Collector Sasson] Bar-Zvi gave the poem the title “The Story of a Refugee from 1948.” The poem is in Palestinian Arabic, but because it was recited in a Bedouin encampment, to a Bedouin audience, it has a [special] place in the corpus of Bedouin poetry of the Negev.… There are thirty-seven couplets with only the last lines of each couplet rhyming. The poet includes his epithet, Abu Kamāl, at the beginning of the poem. 3.7 Before we begin, let us pray upon the Prophet, An Arab prophet, from whose trough all drink. Abu Kamāl recounts what has happened to him, Oh, how tears burnt my cheeks. When I talk, the fire within my heart goes out But then it grows stronger between my ribs. The troubles of time turned my hair white, Most nights are nothing but disaster and anxiety. The bright nights of our country are gone, Dark nights fell upon me. We went adrift, our guide lost the way, We became refugees, fleeing to the mountains. The cliffs became a shelter for our children, We used to live in remote places and caves. Fifty states took over and dominated us, All achieved their aims. They mounted us like clouds in the sky, With cannons sounding like thunder. We left home, with all our belongings behind, Until the survivors will return to our land. We fell prey between Egyptians and Jordanians, Will our sheikhs, whose door had always been open, ever return? pp. 156–157 Chapter 3 “The Catastrophe Lying in Wait” We became beggars, living on other's mercy, Men sleeping with faces downward, starved. How many children have aged ahead of time, And youth descended to the darkness of their graves? How many women left the shade of their mansions, And how many stately mansions have lost their lords? We rejoiced when the Arab kings came to our land, We said: they will carry our burden for us, and the graves. We rejoiced for the coming of Syria, Lebanon and Iraq, And today people are pinning their hopes on Ibn Saud. But never trust one whose home is far, AIl the black flags — to Farouk. He who sent al-Mwawi to shoot the enemy at night, Handed over the land, from Beersheba to Isdūd. They abandoned us at night, paying no attention to us, Sold us like sheep and goats in the market. I returned to our home, I wanted to see it. I found its door and foundations in ruins. I said: Oh home, what has happened to you? Tell me today what transpired. Will you remember, oh home, the time we were your owners? How we dwelled inside you like leopards and lions. How we protected you, oh home, with our weapons, Day and night, oh home, we stood on the borders. Where are our nights, oh home, where is our glory? Where is our carpet that had always been spread? Where are the talismans that adorned our door? Where are the food trays and meat for the guests? Where is the reddish roan? Where is its rider? Where is the sharp sword? pp. 158–159 Chapter 3 “The Catastrophe Lying in Wait” Oh home, come with me to the judge of the winds, Let the two of us be judged by him. If it turns out, home, that the fault is yours, Then I will hit you with an iron mace. But if it turns out, home, that the fault is mine, Then I swear never to return again! My home answered, lamenting and crying, It called me with a heart like stone. It said: we belonged to you, and then to others, And instead of the does came the apes. You left, you didn't give the home its rights, It deserves to be protected with arms and a lance. You should have anointed its doors with blood, Its stones should have been your witnesses. Be patient, as prophets before you were, Be like Job in patience. Leave your case to He who unfurls the heavens, For that is the fate written on the forehead. And if we have sinned, let us pray upon the Prophet, An Arab prophet, from whose trough all drink. This is an exceptional example of the popular Palestinian poetry that the Nakba ignited. Kashūrah's poem displays poetic and political elements seen in the works of well-known Palestinian poets such as Mahmoud Darwish and Taha Muhammad Ali. We still do not know where Kashūrah lived before he reached in Dūrā and the Hebron hills, but apparently he came from one of the Palestinian villages not far from Hebron, on the West side of the Green Line. The poem's literary language was understood quite well among the Bedouin and some of its tropes and figures of speech were common to them and the fellahin. Kashūrah expresses, in potent language, the plight of the refugees — the flight into the mountains, life in impossible conditions, the sadness, fear, the terrible nights, the poverty and the hunger, the destruction of the social fabric and the blow to family ties, old age pouncing on man and early death.

I want to bring my child & his father to Lebanon to live there. I want to go home with all my heart, but I can’t even do that because for one I do not have the $ to petition the courts to get the proper name changes and secondly, they will not allow women to pass down citizenship to their children 💔
