Fascinating stuff— #JWST has spotted the oldest supernova ever confirmed.

It exploded when the #universe was just ~730 Myr old (~5% of its current age).

The whole thing began with a very bright gamma-ray burst, GRB 250314A.🔭 🧪

Paper day!! Little Red Dots (LRDs) are seen everywhere by JWST, but even after 3 years of relentless effort we are still debating what these things actually are. We decompose LRDs to show LRD - Host Galaxy = Black Hole Star (BH*)! 🧵

That shrouded black hole would create a glow that would look, to our telescopes, a little star-like and a little black-hole-like. Specifically, the authors say, this could explain the "Little Red Dots" (LRDs) seen in JWST images of extremely distant parts of the cosmos. 3/🧵

There's an interesting new paper out today (not yet peer reviewed) suggesting an explanation for a weird phenomenon seen with JWST that might point to a "hitherto unobserved physical phenomenon," proposed in a couple of previous papers, called "black hole stars." arxiv.org/abs/2601.20929 1/🧵
Little Red Dot $-$ Host Galaxy $=$ Black Hole Star: A Gas-Enshrouded Heart at the Center of Every Little Red Dot
The central engines of Little Red Dots (LRDs) may be ``black hole stars" (BH*s), early stages of black hole growth characterized by dense gas envelopes. So far, the most direct evidence for BH*s comes...

This paper, out today, caught my eye. It's about the mass function of stars — how many stars of a given mass exist — in massive, early galaxies, and it runs counter to a lot of people's expectations. It's related to some of the excitement about JWST and the earliest epochs of galaxy formation. 🧪🧵
Bottom-heavy initial mass functions reveal hidden mass in early galaxies
JWST observations have revealed that massive galaxies formed and evolved far faster than predicted by galaxy formation models, with many having already assembled a large mass in stars $\sim12$ billion...

I'm excited to announce my newest paper out on arxiv: Expanding the High-z Supernova Frontier with JWST 🚀

We just used JWST to push transient astronomy to z ~ 5, discovering 68 supernovae...all without a dedicated time-domain survey.

Here’s what we found 👇🧵

Admire this fascinating JWST picture.

The cluster MACSJ0159.2-0849, here featured, is a monster made of hundreds of galaxies, ~4.5 billion light-years away.

But the real magic? This galaxy cluster works as a gigantic, natural magnifying glass.
