#ComsatAngels. Like another great post-punk Sheffield band much inspired by science fiction. Name taken from a terrific #JGBallard story about a global child genius conspiracy; song about the sadly neglected Nevil Shute post-apocalyptic novel.

His relationships…all the thousand and one emotionally loaded transactions of his childhood, would have been tolerable if he had been able to pay for them in some neutral currency, hard cash across the high-priced counters of these relationships….

For years now he had
re-mythologized his own childhood…
a small boy playing endlessly by himself in a long suburban garden…Perhaps even his marriage to Catherine…had succeeded precisely because it recreated for him this imaginary empty garden.

Just finished: J.G. Ballard “Running Wild” (Hutchinson), 1988. Finally got around to this gated-community-as-panopticon novella. It was the only work of Ballard’s fiction that I had yet to read. Kind of bittersweet to come to the end. #BookSky #JGBallard

For the writer in particular it is less and less necessary for him to invent the fictional content of his novel. The fiction is already there. The writer's task is to invent the reality.
