In the essay “Holy Water” published in her 1979 collection 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘈𝘭𝘣𝘶𝘮, Joan Didion described the final stanza of Karl Shapiro's poem "California Winter" as having "the power of a prayer." She kept a fragment of it pinned to her kitchen wall for years.
