On #ThisDayInHistory in 1919, #Ireland (once again) declared independence, and its #FirstDáil issued a declaration. On the same day, nine #IRA men attacked a #RIC convoy carrying #gelignite explosives that they could reuse. The #IrishWarOfIndependence was officially under way.

On 28 April 1921 a public notice warned the people of Tipperary that 'a civilian with his hands in his pockets is necessarily an object of suspicion … and renders him liable to arrest and, in an emergency, runs the risk of coming under fire.'

The first contingents of the Black and Tans began arriving in Ireland on 7 January 1920. Alongside the Auxiliaries, the Black and Tans went on to commit many of atrocities and terrorise the civilian population in Ireland.

Coyle was appointed to the executive of Cumann na mBan in 1924 and was elected as president in 1926, after Constance Markievicz resigned to join Fianna Fáil. It was a post she held until her resignation in 1941. 7/7

Many civilians reported being beaten, shot at, and robbed by British forces. Firefighters testified that British forces hindered their attempts to tackle the blazes by intimidation, cutting their hoses and shooting at them. 2/2
