#Headscale
Boa sorte!!!

shoutout to tailscale for being extremely reliable even when i screwed up my headscale config last night

i would say my headscale would never but this was soley because of me taking down my headscale which broke this machine's tailscale connection 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭

this happened because the eu wisp services are hosted on the same server as my headscale service, and i had to take the latter down in the process of fixing things getting borked by my ISP suddenly dying which in turn broke that machine's tailscale connection with the rest of the mesh network

Tailscale is fine for people who don’t want to touch servers, and Headscale works if you’d rather self-host. I’m using a setup where you run your own server and the traffic gets fully masked, way more stable. If you want, I can tell you how to set it up.

When you have a private service that you need to access remotely, you typically want to host a VPN. Tailscale's free personal tier is a popular option for setting one up for people who don't want to set up a server. Headscale is better if you would rather host a similar service on your own VPS.

Yo probé a instalar Headscale en un VPS que es un servidor para Tailscale
Mi plan es montar túnel directo entre dos casas con rangos de IPs privados distintos.
Y con un firmware de OpenWRT con plugins y configuración personalizada ya preparada.

Si, me he pasado un poco

Web interface for the Headscale control server
November 29, 2025 at 8:29 PM
i still use it on a daily basis and its pretty good

clients are open-source, the control plane is not

however, headscale is an open-source control plane re-implementation

Immich - old Optiplex PC in my bedroom
Navidrome - on my main Mac mini in my room (stored on external drive)
Seafile - a VM on a friend's server
Open WebUI - a @upcloud.com VPS

then I have public things like my PDS - pds.j4ck.xyz which is on an OVHCloud VPS. piper.atproto.uk, my own headscale

Adding more reliance on Tailscale for my homelab/personal computing, then remembering they're still very much a startup & the existence of OSS clones (eg, Headscale) is only faint protection from the fact that we're living in the 2020s now & every new year brings new unforced errors…😬

my headscale isn’t :3
remark aside they’ve been going down every two months or so it’s weird
November 19, 2025 at 9:41 PM
lol, thats unfortunate
but imo you shouldnt rely on 3rd parties to get access to your server.

You can self-host headscale; use a reverse proxy; use wireguard; etc.

Vendor lock-in is a real concern with Cloudflare. While convenient, some seek greater control. Open-source alternatives like Headscale or NetFoundry offer flexibility, though often with increased setup complexity. #OpenSource 4/5
