It’s always the same three Elmids found on any survey here in the East Midlands, Oulimnius tuberculatus, Elmis aenea and Limnius volckmari. Also present Orectochilus villosus and Nebrioporus elegans. #Elmidae #Coleoptera #Gyrinidae #Dytiscidae

I can't resist chiming in bc I'm an entomolgist so I'd like to say Yes there are many bugs that do swim well and live in water (please look up "Gyrinidae", they go spin) but many in fact.. can't. The ones I study will just Die if they fall in water or get too wet bc they're just pathetic like that.

What are we looking at? This is a flotilla of whirligig beetles (Family Gyrinidae). They spend most of their lives swimming arcs and loops at the surface of ponds and lakes; nice work if you can get it. 🌿

#Gyrinidae looks bizarre when you catch them in side profile like this. They have eyes staring above the water and eyes staring into the surface below, each wired to a different part of the brain. This one is quite dusty.
