Just in time for the holidays, an appearance from the #flyagaric mushroom, aka #amanitamuscaria! With psychedelic links to Siberian shamanism, as well as prominent ties to the Christmas traditions of northern Europe, this mushroom is a seasonal favorite!

Two young specimens with nearly spherical, bright carmine-red caps and the typical white speckles grow on green moss among darker green grass in a spruce forest on a hazy but bright autumn afternoon. Someone has eaten a hemispherical hole into the cap of the left mushroom; it looks almost like half of a template for a kind of inverted golf ball with outward-curving spherical segments. I haven't removed some blades of grass, which hardly obstruct the view of the mushrooms anyway, because most of them serve as supports for numerous spiderwebs, arranged in several horizontal layers, that rise up behind and above the mushrooms. The trunk of a spruce tree on the right edge of the picture and some birch saplings with a few yellowish-green leaves are also incorporated into the spiders's fantastic artwork.

In 1784, a guy called Samuel Ödmann thought hey, what if the Vikings ate fly agaric mushrooms to go berserk. He told his friends and they were like, yeah that would’ve been cool.

It’s still taken as a fact today.

A cluster of six fly agaric mushrooms of varying ages and sizes. In the middle is a large one, with the edges of the cap turning up so that it forms a bowl. Its white gills are clearly visible along the edges. The caps of the smallest mushrooms are still nearly perfectly round and not much larger than golf balls. The mushrooms are growing on a bare brown forest floor, with just a couple of small ferns and few green leaves of grass poking up between them, contrasting nicely to the red mushrooms. Fly agaric mushrooms have white stems and gills, and bright red caps with white spots.
