#FidoNet
I genuinely believe we should go back to web forums. (But I'd support FidoNet too.)

My first endeavor into social networks was with a #fidonet node in the early 1990s.

Don’t think I’ve been so excited/curious about a tool for building social networks as I’m about @bonfire ever since.

That’s all good. Great, even.

What’s sad is that a huge part of that stems from where the […]

In the last week I've chatted about BBS history, FidoNet, and Radio with fellow #IndieWeb folks. Meshtatic reminds me of all 3. I think I'm understanding it as: a radio, non-cell, non-internet, low power device communications medium, with software apps as endpoint. meshtastic.org/docs/introdu...

Anyone here remembers Stars!? The turn by turn game that we used to play over whatever was available (including FidoNet netmail)

Used it to run remote access pro bbs software with front door mailer, bnu or xoo fossil & tosscan for mail/echo processing.
Was 2:257/168 in fidonet :)

Not sure how tied you are to the BBS scene in general, so excuse any assumptions. :)
I personally haven't logged into a BBS for a few years, but Fidonet was a hellscape if looking for sane conversation.
A nice guy in NZ set up fsxnet, which is a fido style network, and is much saner. fsxnet.nz

@ futurewas8bit It's probably just me, but the FidoNet was reborn as the Fediverse. That said, are there still BBSs around?

Looking into getting #FidoNet running again. #JustBecause
But it looks like a bit of a hellscape to get up and running.

My question is, what do you get via FidoNet in 2025? Anything even remotely interesting?

Suddenly remembered that the reason I got online that very first time was because I wanted to talk to people about Star Trek. 😂🖖

I talked Trek on Q-Link, BBSes, FIDOnet, Usenet, GEnie, god knows where else pre-web. And I found SF cons thanks to talk on BBSes. Think I found Trek cons on my own.

Star Trek conversations were always there. I participated in them on BBSes, FIDOnet, Q-Link, Usenet, GEnie, The Well. And early online journals and weblogs (later called blogs) had plenty of Star Trek content (wasn't all me). Unsurprising since the early users of the internet were geeks.

I can remember old email addresses and even old phone numbers from my youth.

But I just realised I can no longer remember my ICQ number or my fidonet address. It doesn't matter, of course, but still, it mildly irks me.

"I saw Elvis making a MegaMail transfer!"

Sadly, I lost my file of MegaMail* signature lines years and years ago. This is the only one of hundreds that I actually remember. I wonder how many would still be funny/culturally relevant today?

*A store-and-forward forum system similar to FidoNet.
In trawling through deep archives - to find my personal statement and CV from 16 years ago when I applied to PhD programs - I found a file of old one-liners from various long-defunct blogs.

And I've been laughing hard enough at my desk to squeak.
