Looking into getting #FidoNet running again. #JustBecause
But it looks like a bit of a hellscape to get up and running.
My question is, what do you get via FidoNet in 2025? Anything even remotely interesting?

Suddenly remembered that the reason I got online that very first time was because I wanted to talk to people about Star Trek. 😂🖖
I talked Trek on Q-Link, BBSes, FIDOnet, Usenet, GEnie, god knows where else pre-web. And I found SF cons thanks to talk on BBSes. Think I found Trek cons on my own.

I can remember old email addresses and even old phone numbers from my youth.
But I just realised I can no longer remember my ICQ number or my fidonet address. It doesn't matter, of course, but still, it mildly irks me.

I've been doing this online thing so long I still remember my old Fidonet days on dial up BBS's. :)

‘When someone in an echoconference turns to “polite you”, in real life they’d be punching the other person in the face’ — a Russian proverb of sorts from the FidoNet era
(This however is very context/community dependent — users of many professional web forums treat singular you as an insult)

Technical Support
In the BBS days work from home was the norm. Technical support teams were often challenged by arcane hardware rules, software glitches, getting multiple “doors”, “fossil drivers” and FidoNet to work together.

Of course they do. I don't know why I didn't assume that.
This is what bugs the hell of out me, as a Gen-X: "social media" does not mean for-profit and it does not mean corporate. FidoNet and Usenet were *social* media.

Trade Wars ftw! Land of Devastation and Barren Realms Elite were other favorites.
I ran a 4-line FidoNet BBS in the 90s (on OS/2 Warp no less). Loved it.

We first met online.
We were often told we were too old to watch 'cartoons.'
We eventually decided to meet offline for #anime and pizza.
Even though the anime forum *was* internet-linked via FidoNet, basically everyone lived an hour or two from the 'BBS' computer hosting the forum.
That was 1985.

Internet was a mistake too. We should've never left FidoNet and BBS.

uuencode? that’s what they used on USENET before yEnc. not sure if it was the same for Fidonet; i do remember you could somehow use the DOS `debug` command to decode

I used to setup screen readers for Fidonet in a retirement home and I couldn’t agree more. So many little worries in the rearview mirror.
