Deadly silence was broken by an unfamiliar sounding cry, an agonized yell and the sickening crunch of bone being set back into place when the Cowboy recoiled at the sound. Erron had since abandoned the revolver in a numb palm, his spine curved against the wall where he’d been slumped against. A quiver of his lip from the searing pain of open flesh, blood pooling fast below him until it disappeared. Moisture no longer puddled underneath him, shot nerves suddenly uplifted not by pain but warmth. Warmth that began slowly, slow to Erron anyways. Creeping and crawling up from his toes to his head, fingers twitching against his lap, against the cold concrete below. His eyes were far too heavy, unwilling to look at himself anyways… Or who — whatever — that thing was…

An opposite hand moved towards his chest, to feel the stuttering of his misplaced heart to try to detract from the circumstances. His palm met soft cotton, his worn and bloody linens replaced by Kabal’s old New York State t-shirt. Stiff seams digging into feverish skin, causing him to itch all over, what was far better than stinking of blood, sweat, and Kano. “I’ll be in and out,” Kabal began again, bringing the cowboy’s gaze back towards him. A new and deliberate focus on him and not on the supplies. “Whatever happens, you stay put. Got enough to worry about putting both of you on bedrest… Don’t need anyone playing God about it.”

The Gunslinger was left alone again with his thoughts. His own thoughts. Left in the scary silence and stillness of the base. No movement other than Kabal, no words. Only the tense conversation that took place a room away, what he couldn’t hear only added to the inner turmoil. “Hope this is alright… I’ve gotta get across the hall and drag all that stuff back,” Kabal began again, bottles of juice and water respectively in one hand. An array of options for snacks in the other. Granola bars with chocolate and cherry and a sleeve of plain crackers that made deja vu rush in… Another life perhaps, another where he was at Kano’s mercy instead of Kabal’s kindness.

The Gunslinger looked back for only a moment, the first bag placed, then the second. His hands steadying to push himself upwards before Kano had the chance to take off without him. One last look that had him locking eyes with a familiar masked figure in the distance. His younger self poised and approaching, the sheen of a rifle raising from his back. Aim taken as Erron scrambled upwards, just in time as they took off back towards the hideout.

Erron’s arms propped atop the mattress, on his knees against the springs as his head hung low. Sweat sheened his skin, soaked his hair in more defined curls as they caught along the untended scruff of his face. Metal cinched tight around one wrist, opposite the arm bound by the artifact. His chest rose and fell, long panting breaths attempting to guard himself from the reach of invisible hands. His eyes shut tight, unable to properly register the sounds of the door opening and closing once more. He was nearly on the verge of a desperate howl, writhing in place as tight steel bit back against the skin of his wrist. Whatever sort of hold Shang Tsung had on him, it was certainly getting worse. A tortured grunt tried to stifle words, the cowboy’s consciousness not fading into fog now. The Sorcerer’s tone erupted from his throat, tacking his limbs still against the springs. Magic winding slowly inside of him like cogs stopped in a clocktower, keeping him observant to the conversation. Shang Tsung wanted him to hear every word this time.

The smile he knew more recently that had since turned into a deep frown, lacking that cockiness he so loathed. Like a mirror image of the woman he once knew, but smaller. Intertwined with a Kano sized ego. Shouldering the burdens of legacies not a soul Erron could think of deserved. “Ain’t stupid.” Erron Black muttered. “Seen stranger things burrowing in the sand under us right now.” The thought of it made Billie’s face twist into a grimace, shuddering as her hand caught her opposite arm.

Erron didn’t respond, not with words. He cursed that damn Sorcerer in his head, screaming a warning through his mind to leave it be when his body crawled slowly off the mattress and towards those steel bars. Only inches away from those gentle hands he so missed… The only strings of physical kindness, the only inkling he internalized as being worthy of something like gentleness. “Feel worse than that time you wrung me out like a rag…” Erron managed to sputter, his scruffy face still pale from the writhing sickness. “Seems old habits will always come back around eventually,” she whispered, her palm open to rest his wrist. Veins facing upwards as her eyes dragged over, blues and purples pulsating against cool fingertips. Her focus channeled into a tiny fraction of magic reserves.

In between his serving Shao Kahn and his allying to Shang Tsung by default, Erron was eventually taken in to the Flesh Pits for studying. As Shao Kahn had ordered for many of his circle. His daughters, Kitana and Rosella, included. What would lead to the creations of Mileena, Skarlet, The Nightrider, and Ermac. Erron paid it little mind, spending centuries in the new world, moving wherever the gold flowed. Taking it to where whiskey flowed faster. In present day, Erron Black’s allegiances to Kotal Kahn are more than skin deep. The first leader he’s found to show him mercy, and even companionship without strings (RE: Kano).

The remaining rounds fired from the rifle Erron managed to prop on the concrete floors. Half piercing through The Cowboy’s leg, then up his back when a more stable grip managed. Click. Click. The ragged Gunslinger swore under his breath, not yet disarming as he watched… He didn’t cease to exist, nor did The Cowboy flinch. Bullets held into skin without so much as a drop of blood, the shrug of his shoulders scattering them to the ground. His tattooed hand reached to pull one from his leg, flicking it across the floor as he turned to face Erron. He crouched to examine where bone stuck out, a familiar face paled with blood loss. Erron Black thought he was dreaming when ammunition scattered, as if it bounced off The Cowboy without a sound, without a spray. “For the gal who’s priding herself on her daddy being an arms dealer, you sure as Hell ain’t armed… You got more bullets than what’s in that?” Erron motioned to Billie’s side arm, held firm and untouched on her holster, a cybernetic hand bringing it up to examine. The magazine unclicked, full, but small, earning a scoff from the cowboy. He muttered something under his breath, something cursing Kano for not letting her have a proper gun on her person. All that Billie couldn’t make out through the muffle of his mask. “Emergencies only,” Billie muttered, “ain’t had to use it yet…” Her eyes were glued into the abyss, the twisted roots that ended under their boots. What she could see followed a uniform pathway, an eerie feeling overtaking when she looked above to be met with darkness. The treeline looked normal enough, it was what moved beyond the rolling fog that made her blood run cold. Green eyes stared out into the darkness, suddenly overtaken by the memory of old nightmares. Of walking fast through to the maze’s middle, of hitting her back on those very roots, what warmth overtook shortly after. Following that ghostly figure, one that almost looked like… Erron held the grip of one of his revolvers out to her, nudging her shoulder to regain her attention, her eyes still wide from the replays of deja vu. Of all of those scribblings in her childhood, trees with faces, a man in a hat holding her hand tight through the dark. All the blood… “You still with me, Tumbleweed? Take it, you’re gonna need it.” Her organic hand hesitated over the grip, studying the cowboy’s old fashioned revolver… “Smith and Wesson,” she muttered, “I’ve seen a couple, but…” “It’s an original, 1854. Use it if you gotta, but you wait for me to shoot first… We make to that portal and something else comes out first, I’ll handle it. You stay outta sight, and don’t get eaten. C’mon. We ain’t got all day…” Erron Black’s rifle moved from Miss Lucy’s saddle, finding its way back into his hands, leading the way into the abyss. “Wait, what? Portal?” Billie began to follow, her feet almost stumbling when she said the word aloud, a word that suddenly brought a vision of hellfire back to mind, swirls of neverending Netherrealm fire she never could put a name to. “You said you were taking me to find the truth about Shao Kahn – about everything – you…” “I’m takin’ you home,” Erron huffed, catching her by the collar of her jacket when she stood back up straight, his revolver tucked ill-fittingly in the holster she wore, her sidearm pistol switching hands for a moment. “Back to Earthrealm, back to yer mama and daddy!” Billie struggled for a moment to break away from his grip, the two now fully engulfed in the darkness of the Living Forest, aside from the many pinpoint eyes that watched them. The clicking and scraping of bark, of jaws unhinging and closing shut again. All that the Dragoness couldn’t register at the moment, plummeting back to the uneven roots below when she pushed away from the cowboy. “So much for finding out the truth!” She screeched, scooping up stones from in between the roots, tossing them as hard as she could towards Erron. His brows furrowed when rocks bounced off numb arms, thudding against the fabric of his poncho. “You promised! The fuck am I stealin’ from Da for if you ain’t keepin’ yer promise!” The cowboy’s hand moved back to her jacket, his rifle lowering only to drag her back to her feet, to try to silence her voice rustling through the trees. What agitated the faces that stared, what brought even more eerie eyes onto them.

Kano scoffed softly, chills running up his spine at that. How vague it was spoken in front of the Gunslinger, who he wasn’t even sure was listening. Erron didn’t acknowledge either of them at the moment, only continued to follow as Geras turned to leave. “Then why ain’t lesser Erron helping out in Earthrealm? He’s real good at followin’ whoever’s got his leash.” “Which is why Erron Black has been chosen for a different task, Kano. One that will hinge on that unbreaking loyalty. We all have our duties, you should stick to yours.” “I’m still owed for services rendered, mate! I’m still expectin’ Kronika to hold up her end of the deal when this is all said and done, cybernetics ain’t exactly cheap. Neither is missin’ out on that conversation with the missus.” Geras had already turned, a small smirk growing as he paused before beginning to leave. His gaze turned downward, hands crossed behind his back for a moment as he listened to the arms dealer’s complaints. “I believe Kronika’s words were not so simple. She never promised such a materialistic outcome, she promised the clan’s thriving success. What you’ve been waiting for has already stood in front of you, you need only wait.”

“Suppose I am already off to a start, being the worst mother in the realms…” she said, thinking aloud more so than answering Erron’s rhetorical. “I wasn’t even certain it was possible, that I…” she trailed off for a moment before her eyes cut back to him. “Suppose I needed to hear that dose of realism… Being selfish… I should’ve trusted my logical judgement.” Erron stared back, rough hands brushing his hair out of his eyes. Attempting to find the words to respond with, all that remained in his throat. “If not alongside Kano, if not Earthrealm, where can I go?” The Gunslinger’s chest tightened suddenly, his head moving back downward before he could manage a response. Visuals overtook his vision for a moment, almost relieving many a surgery from the Sorcerer’s eyes, filtered into his own like a not so distant memory. The woman in front of him was no more than a subject on the autopsy table, flesh split and sewn back in place for the sake of studies. Erron’s breath sputtered at the sight, a small voice in the back of his head muttering about his lack of thoroughness. Otherwise the situation wouldn’t weigh so heavily… “Are you alright?” “Ain’t trying to scrutinize,” Erron cleared his throat, “just making sure you’re well aware… One of these days that big knife of his’ll stick in your back too…” Skarlet hummed in acknowledgement, a brief pause hanging in the air before the subject changed. Her mind elsewhere now. “Does your certainty rise from your own experience? You assume this child will be as disastrous as yourself because you are between realms as well?” His expression twisted, new knowledge that hit his ears falling together like puzzle pieces with a perfect match. Retrospect made it all come together, what miracles were thought to have been when he was the first son… Only to be riddled with health issues all assumed were his mother’s punishment for infidelity. All that decided in that tiny Texas town that Ambrose Weston Jr. was the Devil’s child. He didn’t speak for a moment, recounting those dreadful early years of more than just teasing. The lashings at his ‘father’s’ drunken rampages, brought on by the inability to break the household in two. He knew Kano well enough – it was bound to spiral downwards eventually.

her other hand stuffed in her coat pocket. Her head only turned back at him to stare for a moment. Examining the larger picture, the state he was in. Irritation seemed to be relieved in his arm somewhat, despite the odd twitch of his trigger finger looking for stolen revolvers. “There is no other choice,” Skarlet muttered, lingering by the cracked door, “your experiences bear no reflection on us, Salazar. At least we are conscious of what may happen, at least Kano and I care enough to do something about it.” Erron huffed loudly, a humorless and low chuckle following when his position on the floor changed. Plastic bottles and wrappers rattled as his legs moved, attempting to stretch old bones before sitting back on the ‘bed’. “Then I guess you and Kano really are two of a kind. Just as selfish as each other if you think this’ll be a good idea.” She did not face him when he spoke, her posture rigid as her hand reached for the door knob. “Pushing up daisies, Miss Skarlet.” The door shut with an echoing click, leaving Erron back in the dim silence of his cell. Ropes around his hands had since been relieved, the freedom of movement coming only at the cost of the bars that caged him into his kennel.

The Gunslinger exhaled sharply, a smirk forming on his lips. Something so uncanny to the woman who’d never seen his face. Her attempts at a hurtful comment were anything but, shaking his head as a humorless laugh erupted in a low rumble. “Guess we gotta start breaking that habit, then. Looking out for each other. Memory serves, I was the only one who gave a damn when you disappeared and came back with a thirty yard stare…” “Do not pretend as if you ever cared for me, Salazar…” “Hell, believe whatever the hell you want, Miss Skarlet. Awfully far past caring what you or him think of me… “ Skarlet’s brow furrowed, her gaze since parted from the cowboy sitting below, turmoil raging in her chest. Empty silence filled only by the slight shuffle of readjustment, Erron moving to better face her. “It ain’t just about the damn bracelet, is it? Kano ain’t here, is he? Otherwise, I know sure as hell you wouldn’t be down here…” He looked her up and down, that lingering dread not disappearing yet. “Cause ain’t it awfully ironic. You and I are both stuck here cause of him…”

Skarlet didn’t hesitate, not wanting to get in the way of Kabal’s day to day, but still needing conversation. The door was fortified, her hands mindful to keep locks undone, to prop it against something so that it didn’t close. It was the interior that gave her chills. A hastily barred holding cell, spacious and empty aside from what she supposed qualified as a bed. Plastic wrappers and bottles scrawled about from its inhabitants scarce rations. A steel locker pressed against the inner walls, just in view to mock the Gunslinger. Cruel reminders the Black Dragon stripped him of his gear, his guns, his livelihood. Erron didn’t look up as the door cracked, early morning spilling in as the Mage’s form moved forward into the shadows. His back pressed into the edge of the wooden plank that constituted his ‘bed’, sitting on cool concrete floors. His head turned only for a moment to see crimson leather in his peripheral, assuming Kira and Kobra returned to resume torturous mocking. “I am surprised to see you awake…” Skarlet’s hands instinctively crossed over her middle, the briefest glance at the man’s side eye filling her with dread. The armlet’s grip on him seemed to loosen, though. The skin around gold was less tight, less inflamed, something curious…

“And be thankful this is a minor injury, aside from whatever has sunk its teeth into you. Had you lost a limb, I wouldn’t have been any help at the moment.” “Lucky me, ain’t it? She plans on keepin’ it… And you ain’t gotta keep pretending you ain’t after her. I saw what you were after down there in that lab, your own lil’ clone abomination you think you can family with… I’ll bet Ruby doesn’t even know. ” Kano trailed off for a moment, smugness fading back into a tight scowl when the cowboy didn’t face him. The hair that hung over his eyes, now replacing the obscuring his hat usually added. All that was left was that damn mask. “Should know… Already got the leg up on ya, Coyote ,” Kano mumbled, moving up to grab a fistful of Erron’s hair. The leather clasps of his muzzle were still secure on the back of his head, snapped with the skilled slice of a blade. “Little bloke of yours, he didn’t make it outta that little aquarium tank… Dead ‘fore he even woke up.” Mismatched eyes scanned him harder now, that artifact pressing further into raw skin. The loose fabric of his undershirt hung off of one shoulder, dotted with deep lightning scars like the roots of trees overgrown. Inflammation from where the armlet dug seemed to travel upwards towards those ‘roots’. To some jagged circular symbol Kano could only assume Erron had carved himself. The other marked in dark ink, tattoos bearing the tribal symbols of the Osh-Tekk warriors, signs of trust in Kotal Kahn’s most respected circles. Kano’s brow knit, sneering under his breath at everything that painted the Gunslinger’s body in the ownership of others. None of them being his . “Do not act so surprised ,” Shang Tsung said lowly, watching the arms dealer’s guard go down for the briefest second before it was brought up again. “You’ve always been so reckless , ill-mannered. Not a thought beyond what consequences come with the base urges you and Patient X snuck around to indulge in… In any case, you’ll need an expert, won’t you? Unless you’d rather your Blood Mage be on the autopsy table again .”

Erron never locked eyes with her, finding a decent place to stare off at pristine silver. Cybernetic fingers clasped around bright blue aluminum. Must’ve snuck it in on her way from Earthrealm. The two had only ever seen one another from a distance, near the city’s entrance, at least in the present day. Last he saw her up close, she was days old, staring at him in just the same way, still never bothering to even learn her name. It was uncanny enough to feel her eyes on him. Time being such a strange thing in Outworld. This must’ve been his karma. The nail in his coffin. His past finally caught up to him, only in the form of a teenage girl.

Kano shrugged, too nonchalantly for her liking as he directed the trio to bring Erron on the deck. “Find one of those empty storage rooms, make use of whatever ain’t being used. We’ll pay him a little visit before we head back… And, you’n me, Ruby. We’ll bring a few blokes to watch our backs. Why? You ain’t scared, are ya?” Scared? Skarlet would have scoffed. Desperate, perhaps, hesitant, but never scared. Her arm subconsciously moved around her middle, pressing tight into the gear that covered the whispering reminders. “Ill at ease,” she corrected him softly, green eyes shifted as the mercenaries carried the Gunslinger away.
