Fan

Georgia Hubley of Yo La Tengo watches Rebecca Gates at Dromfest behind Left Hand Ciders. Because Yo La Tengo aren’t just rock stars, they’re also huge music fans. Pentax 17, Harman Phoenix II, ECN-2 development.

Shirley and Moviola

I’ve known Shirley for something like 35 years. We met up with her at Dromfest. Here she is shooting video of Moviola. She’s dating the drummer, who she was also in a band with back in the 1990s. Pentax 17, Harman Phoenix II, ECN-2 development.

Moviola

It’s probably 25 years or so since the first time I saw Moviola on a visit to Columbus. This was the most recent time I’ve seen them, at Dromfest, outside at Return Brewing Outpost. They just keep putting out good music. Pentax 17, Harman […]

Tonight in NYC, Dew Claw play their first east coast show since Dromfest ‘24, with Evan “Funk” Davies on drums and James McNew on bass.
Tomorrow (Thurs) night I’m playing drums for the only east coast appearance of Dew Claw (ex-Hypnolovewheel, XL Kings, King Missile, etc.)! James McNew from Yo LaTengo is on bass! Ira and Georgia are DJing! Not to mention Greg Cartwright solo and Sloppy Heads!! All at Mama Tried in BK, 6:30pm! Go!!

Finally got around to hanging the #SteveKeene painting we bought at #Dromfest. His famous album cover paintings were too big to haul back, but I like this one because it's unique. $20 well spent!

Return Brewing

Just around the corner from The Avalon Lounge. This was a secondary location for Dromfest. There was a stage outside with lots of picnic tables. Plus beer. Leica R4, Film Ferrania P33, Rodinal 1:50.

The Avalon Lounge

This is where Dromfest was held. It’s a little dive bar and restaurant, holds maybe 200 people if you squeeze in really tight. Dromfest was a lot of fun. Leica R4, Film Ferrania P33, Rodinal 1:50.

New Radiant Storm King

I can’t say I ever heard of this band, and that’s my loss. They were really good. I gather they don’t play much any more, but they played Dromfest. Rollei 35AF, Ilford Delta 3200, Rodinal 1:50.

Scrawl + YLT

Sue Harshe from Scrawl is at the left, then James McNew of Yo La Tengo, then Marcy Mays from Scrawl. The Yo La Tengo show at Dromfest was awesome. I’ve seen them dozens of times and this was one of the best. The room was packed and it […]

Thalia Zedek Band

I used my Rollei 35AF loaded with Ilford Delta 3200 for indoor shots at Dromfest. Honestly, it didn’t work very well. Most of the shots look kind of abstract. I love grain, but they’re maybe even too grainy for me. Anyway. Thalia Zedek was amazing.

Made it to Florida okay. Don’t shoot anything. Went to look at the web site and found that *tomorrow* counts too. Even if it didn’t, I realized that I had some shots on a roll I shot last weekend at Dromfest that were shot on Monday and therefore count.

Brooklyn Cider House

Just before I left for Florida, I developed a roll of Harman Phoenix II that I put through the Pentax 17 last weekend at Dromfest. The fest ended a day before #WWHFPD , so I figured the roll wouldn’t count, but I realized […]

John Beekman joining Fly Ashtray on stage at Dromfest to sing a Michael Anzalone song is so 250% my thing. The NYC indie-rock equivalent of, say, Bob Welch jumping up on stage with Fleetwood Mac to sing "The Green Manalishi." www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Skw...

My right ear started acting up partway thru Phantom Tollbooth’s hi-volume set, so I decided to quit while I was ahead. Thx DromFest, hope to see ya next year! (6/6)

I was skeptical about a Dambuilders gig that was billed as basically Dave Derby and friends. But when yr friends include Brendan Canty (Fugazi) and Sean Eden (Luna)… it’s gonna sound great, and it did. Surprise guest: original member Eric Masunaga! (5/6)

While I’d very much enjoyed Thalia Zedek’s solo set I caught a month prior in Seattle, the (almost) full band version was mind-blowingly good. Go see them if you can! (4/6)

Rebecca Gates played solo and Spinanes songs, incl an especially sweet duet w/Elizabeth Mitchell of Ida on “Hawaiian Baby”. (3/6)

Mark Robinson blazed through an unbroken medley of 50 Unrest, Air Miami, etc songs. (Thx to Frank Boscoe for letting me take a pic of the set list) (2/6)

Oh, I almost forgot… Day 3 of DromFest (Sun): The welcome return of Fly Ashtray and their arty squiggle-pop. So nice to chat w/James for the first time in almost 30 years. Fun fact: He recorded my old band’s sole record. (1/6)

I keep changing my mind about which was my favorite performance of DromFest, and Scrawl is right up there. Everyone brought their A-game, tbh

Last band on was Yo La Tengo, playing to ~100 of us lucky (sweaty) souls. I had a, uh, “peek-a-boo view”, but no matter. It was a treat. Lots of rarely-played tunes, incl more than one from Ride the Tiger.

Time for another 90s reunion! Madder Rose brought things down a notch, playing languid, pedal-steel-inflected alt-hits like “Try” and “Swim.” (5/5)
