At Shiwa Furu Inari Shrine, even the purification water freezes in the New Year’s chill. A pile of New Year decorations, likely for the upcoming Dondo-yaki fire ritual, has already been placed there.

This morning, I joined in the local village festival “dondo-yaki.” It’s essentially a bonfire to burn New Year decoration as well as student’s calligraphy writings. Various villages have such traditions and different items to burn. Everyone loves drinking sake around a good bonfire.

Local festival “dondo-yaki.” People burn the New Year festive ornaments and cook colorful rice cakes stuck on tree branches. The rice cakes symbolize harvest, income, health, fertility, and other good things. Local elders are eager to include us newcomers in these festivals.
