Tarzan came out when the Disney Renaissance was winding down, but I think its the most underrated entry in that cycle. Great world and characters, and some genuinely emotional moments. Glenn Close as Kala really steals the show. #Tarzan #DisneysTarzan #DisneyRenaissance

Just watched The Rescuers Down Under.

Mid-tier at best. 2 outta 5. First act drags, albatross saves the midsection, but it never lands.

🐭 The Mouse That Dragged
Revisiting The Rescuers Down Under (1990), Disney's Most Forgettable Renaissance Film

This story should’ve starred an Aboriginal child.

Final verdict: 2/5

Just go watch Ratatouille. Or The Secret of NIMH, which does everything this tries to do—but better.

Final rating: 2/5

Better to revisit The Secret of NIMH—Bluth already nailed this vibe. Or go enjoy Ratatouille if you want heart + rodent heroics done right.

Okay, I’ll give Rescuers Down Under this:

Albatross Air? Genuinely funny.

The pun. The delivery. The busted runway.

It’s the first moment that actually made me chuckle.

If the rest of the movie had this kind of wit, I’d be way more on board.

Credit where it’s due:

Albatross Air is the best joke in the movie so far.

The concept, the delivery, the sad little landing strip—it actually got a laugh out of me.

Shame it’s surrounded by so much drag.

How is this movie only 1 hour and 17 minutes and yet feels like it’s dragging for eternity?

Poor Bernard lost the ring… and I lost my patience.

I’m just not here for it.

Honestly? Ratatouille did the “hero rat with a heart” thing way better.

We’re only 12 minutes in and this thing is already dragging.

Runtime’s like 1hr 15min, but somehow it feels long.

So far? I’m hovering around a 2 out of 5—maybe a 3 if it sticks the landing (but I doubt it).

This might be the weakest of the Renaissance bunch.

Okay, so I get the kangaroos. I get the wombat.

But the giant golden eagle?? That thing feels America-coded—like a Thunderbird from Native myth. It doesn’t feel Australian at all.

So… the music shifted.

We started with some Aboriginal-influenced sounds—percussion, flute tones, maybe even didgeridoo-adjacent textures.

Voice acting is… fine.

I’m liking the animation more as it goes, but stylistically? It feels like a holdover from the ’70s—especially the animal designs.

Oh, we really are going down under—Uluru and all.

The animation looks solid. Not quite the polish of The Little Mermaid, but it’s got texture and life.

🧵 Film Review Series: Disney Renaissance – Day 3

Tonight we’re diving into The Rescuers Down Under (1990), the sequel to 1977’s The Rescuers — which, full confession, I’ve never seen.

Tonight’s review: The Rescuers Down Under (1990)

A sequel to The Rescuers (1977), which—full honesty—I’ve never actually seen. And I haven’t watched Down Under since I was a kid.
