I've waited a lifetime to find Striated Bird's Nest fungus, and this week I've seen it twice! Also a magnificent colony of Coral Slime-mould, a troop of another slime-mould Physarum sp. with a lime-encrusted peridium and a heap of Witch's Butter. At @wildlifebcn.org Old Sulehay NR

Another day, another special woodland where (thanks to some inside information) I finally found Fluted Bird's Nest fungi - so strange but so perfect. Plus plenty Of Wrinkled Peach, including this one sheltering some youngsters and a splendid display of Toothed Crust (I think!)

A lot of fungi tend to get common once you find them for the first time. Especially if they are actually common (but sometimes even uncommon species you happen to have the right locality for). An example is Cyathus striatus, very common but quite hard to spot. Once you get an eye for it though...

Cyathus olla, Field Bird's Nest Fungi, has sprung up in our garden again. Amazing to see these tiny fruiting bodies which resemble a bird's nest complete with eggs. #fungi #BirdsNestFungi #Yorkshire

Cyathus striatus or Bird's nest fungi! That fuzzy exterior is wild!!! I didn't see any *eggs* inside, but the striations are pretty clear. Find a moment of joy... fascists hate that.

New to me: the fascinating Fluted Bird's Nest - Cyathus striatus. Growing in damp wood chip under trees; Talgarth, Powys.
The white epiphragm caught my eye, which has brown hairs. Inner surface of the funnel-shaped peridium (1cm wide) is fluted and has pale egg-shaped peridioles at base.

Cyathus striatus...or...Bird's nest fungi! The dark ones are new. It's hard to see the striations just beginning to form at the top this close ...I think the white moldy ones are older ones!

P.S. Don't be a Nazi!

Several species in this group can be found in the UK and are common at Kew growing as saprotrophs: or wood decaying species, on woodchip in autumn including the fluted bird’s nest (Cyathus striatus) and the white-egged bird’s nest (Crucibulum leave).

The bird’s nest fungus uses the kinetic energy from raindrops to disperse their spores. Each nest shaped fruiting body contains many egg-like peridioles that contain thousands of spores. The water droplets send the fungus’s small peridioles flying out of their “nest”.

Whilst wet weather might not be everyone’s cup of tea, Kew’s Mycologists are celebrating this rainy #FungiFriday, with hopes it will instigate some welcome fungal activity!

Many fungi use rain to spread their spores, such as often-over-looked bird’s nest fungi, also known as “splash cups”.
