Single frame OSIRIS-WAC image of Comet 67P taken at 0057UT April 10, 2016, while Rosetta was at a distance of 29.93 km. This image is a modified version of the April 12th OSIRIS Image of the Day, viewable here: planetgate.mps.mpg.de/Image_of_the_Day/public/WAC_2016-04... The original image was taken from a low phase-angle, which results in a bright glow (called the opposition surge) in the downsun direction. The brightness of the opposition surge is directly related to the surface's roughness. Here I have removed the opposition surge with a neutral density filter to reveal true brightness differences on the surface of the comet. A dust storm in the north polar dune fields of Olympia Planum. This storm was sparked by the passage of a polar cold front during the late Martian summer. At this point in the Martian year, the northern polar cap is shrinking at its fastest rate. This creates a pool of cold air around the pole that occasionally spills south across the north polar plains, similar to frontal systems here on Earth. These fronts grow in intensity throughout the late summer and early fall, fueled by the growing temperature between the cold air over the polar cap and surrounding plains warmed by the long summer days. These fronts occasionally slip far enough south to spark large regional or even global dust storms. A similar front that formed approximately one month later reached the Martian mid-latitudes before growing into the global dust storm that enshrouded the Martian surface for much of 2018. This image was taken by the Mars Express HRSC camera on April 3, 2018 during the spacecraft's 18,039th orbit of Mars. It combines images taken through the spacecraft's BLU, GRN, and IR filters to create a natural color image similar to what a human eye in orbit would see. Image Credit: ESA/DLR/FU Berlin/J. The convergence point for Yutu's stereo camera system was set only a few meters from the rover, which makes producing comfortable stereo viewing over the wide depth of field in this image difficult.

Alteration of the official New Horizons "extended color" release in order to approximate true color. This works on the assumption that the green and blue channels in the official MVIC release represent essentially raw MVIC red and blue filters. The green and blue channels were blended (55% red, 45% blue; determined by comparing to older true color image releases). The green channel in the official image release became red, and the synthetic green channel was inserted in its place.

This region is located int the wider Arcadia Planitia region which is part of Mars' northern lowlands. The clouds here appear to be largely dust clouds kicked up by the movement of a polar front driven by the seasonal sublimation of the north polar cap.
