Queen Carola's Parotia
Parotia carolae

Bird-of-paradise. Elaborate courtship: flips its iridescent blue cape-like feathers over its head like a disco ball. Male has to go through 5 intro dances + main event, the “ballerina dance.” Loud, quavering shriek.

Oh my god, I'm so happy about this! I haven't bought a textbook in so long. I couldn't afford it if I had to pay for the class too. Thank you so much, @birdsoftheworld.bsky.social, for helping me learn even more about birds and biology.

I’m at my dentist office. Every room has live video from CornellLab of birds feeding! This is in Southern Indiana! These people understand and respect the diversity among the birds! They enjoy and appreciate the difference between the species! Birds of a color also enjoy birds of another color!!

Do you have the CornellLab Merlin sound ID Bird app on your phone by chance? It's really cool if you haven't yet got it. Really fun to put the calls with the birds, and I often hear less common birds I never actually see. One of my favorites to open up when I take the dog for walks.

Just came across this article in the latest issue of the Living Bird magazine. The illustrations are awesome and so are the words/terms (Zugunruhe, Regional Heterothermy,...) covered.

Thanks birdfriends, for sharing your knowledge and directing me to CornellLab.

I love their description of Cardinals' song: "In summer, their sweet whistles are one of the first sounds of the morning."

Here's a good start to the week: Jadis munches while Cardinals sing.

This precious winged jewel was a lifer for me today! CornellLab says: "No birder can forget that first breeding male Blackburnian Warbler: the intricate black-and-white plumage set off by flame-orange face and throat, the impossibly high-pitched flourish at the end of the song..." So true!🪶 #birding
