I tend to see it as Liberal Christanity forgetting its own history, and failing to "finish the drill" against fundamentalism's anti-modernity movement. There was a time when fundie vs liberal Christian fights were on the cover of nat'l magazines, and the liberals won! But the losers have festered.
liberal christians genuinely cannot wrap their heads around the idea that people who fervently believe in jesus can do & want terrible things. it's a minor frustration in the scope of things, but also an astonishing ignorance of history and an unwitting embrace of hegemony
