... & allowing Chambers & co to push for Registered Reports.

I'll be handling (mostly) brain & nerve stimulation papers, & will do whatever I can to promote:

- Good methods
- Good stats
- Clear reporting
- Replications
- Non-glamour
- Debunking

So, #BrainStim scientists, submit your best work!

Debunking the Myth of Excitatory and Inhibitory Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in Cognitive Neuroscience Research
Abstract. Repetitive TMS (rTMS) is a powerful neuroscientific tool with the potential to noninvasively identify brain–behavior relationships in humans. Early work suggested that certain rTMS protocols...

I'm writing a paper, trying to condense ~23k words written by ~57 people into a coherent narrative summary of what they discussed.

It's bloody hard, tiring work.

And it *should be*. Because writing is thinking, & thinking is hard.

And it's why I only write ~1 paper a year on average now.

Hold on to your transducers, TUS community! We've focused on managing what participants can hear during stimulation… but how about what they feel?! Our BrainStim paper maps tactile, thermal, & painful sensations during transcranial ultrasonic stimulation - and reveals how to minimize them. Thread👇

I'm no TDCS expert, so can't comment. All brainstim methods can push energy into the brain, so that's not really in doubt I think.

More important - & less certain - is can that current actually interfere with ongoing processing in meaningful ways? Tricky! Blanket statements will likely be wrong.

We all need to watch out for this - one of the most common errors - in our own & others' work.

It's often described in the paper as:

"Patients with the lowest baseline scores improved the most after the intervention."

Happy birthday Short-latency Afferent Inhibition (SAI): 25 years young today! 🥳

Following a peripheral stimulus to the hand, corticospinal excitability is inhibited around 20-30ms later.

After 25 years' research, what is the mechanism of this inhibition?

It seems a trivial thing, but whether it's 4 or 8 makes the difference between theory A and theory B.

A is my theory, the boring one. Theory B is the exciting one. Most/all *authors* support theory B. But viewed critically, most *data* support theory A.

Paper to follow, one day...

I left twitter pretty early after the takeover, I’ve missed the community and interactions. Looking forward to finding that again here 🦋.

By way of intro 👋, I’m a Clinical Neuropsychologist in private practice and research - focussed on improving function and seeing if brainstim can help do that.
