Your role as a leader (at all levels) is to help alleviate impediments to better outcomes.

Work does not stay static in one place, it moves around. Agile create a new product, Lean repetitive production, shallow dip into Chaos, back into agile create.

This is an adaptation of Cynefin (Dave Snowden).

If everything is a priority, nothing is a priority.
The more cars on the road, the slower they go.

Limit work in progress.
Stop starting, start finishing.

The railway didn't take a Big Bang, big batch approach, instead they started small and tested different options (maintaining variability to the last responsible moment), with experimentation.

Optimise for emergence: outcome hypotheses, experimentation, minimise time to learning, data feedback loops, autonomy, psychological safety, within Minimal Viable Guardrails.

What can we learn from this? How can we adapt to be stronger, to be more antifragile?
It requires an absence of fear, an environment for learning small and quickly and a generative culture.

▶️ Data feedback loops (ensuring that the KRs are measurable and measured, visualising data in tooling, reporting, inspect & adapt)

Together, they address
complementary questions: “Can the organisation survive?” and “Does it benefit from
disorder?”

Interested in your thoughts on the attached.

Learning loops were tight and continuous, with a focus on leading measures, which translate to the lagging measures improving.

Between 2012 and 2019, Team Sky won 7 Tour de France titles. The system was designed so that good outcomes emerge.

Organise and optimise for the desired outcomes you want!
e.g. Better (quality) Value, Sooner (time to value), Safer (GRC) and Happier (customers, colleagues, citizens and climate)!

CoPs are a great ninja move to scale learning, make a large organisation seem smaller, to identify and support natural champions, with agency and invitation, appealing to intrinsic motivation.

Improve via emergence, learning by doing, visualising the system of work, perfectly imperfect, within guardrails.

Not by endlessly iterating a Powerpoint deck.

Thankfully, we are now moving away from people as cogs in a machine, to multidisciplinary teams with alignment to shared goals and increased autonomy as to how to get there, within minimal viable guardrails.

It is the network, not the org chart, that creates value.

Inspired by the "I, Pencil" essay (1958) by Leonard Read.

What works in one area, might not work in another area, hence it's also not one pendulum or pointer.
