Tips sought in recent arsons at historic Detroit church
Authorities are asking the public for help to find a person of interest wanted in connection to fires set at a historic church on Detroit's west side. Officials said the fires were set on March 22, 2025, at the former Bushnell Congregational Church. The building is in the 15000 block of the Southfield Freeway near Grand River Avenue. Detroit firefighters said a fire was reported at the building at about 8:30 a.m. A security camera captured footage of a man leaving the area when the fire happened, they said. Investigators said a smaller fire was reported outside the building earlier in the day. They said the person of interest is a man with a light complexion and dark hair. He was wearing a grey sweatshirt, dark grey pants, black and white sneakers, and a large black puffy coat. Investigators released a photo of the man. Officials said a man matching the same description was seen at about 2 a.m. the same day setting fire to a dumpster at a Wendy’s fast food restaurant about two blocks from the church. City officials said the Bushnell Congregational Church was established in 1926 and became Detroit's largest congregational church and one of the largest congregational churches in the country by the 1950s. In January, the head of a nondenominational church that occupies the building and uses psychedelic mushrooms as its rituals sued the city, claiming it is violating the Constitution by forcing the church to remain closed. Anyone with information about the person of interest or the fires should call the Detroit Police Department’s Arson Unit at (313) 596-2940, the department's Arson Unit tip line at (313) 628-2900, or Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) SPEAK-UP. #14: The Truckee Street Murders - A Fatal Mistake at 2:40 A.M.
Five lives lost in the dead of night. What looked like a targeted act was only the beginning of the real horror. In August 2020, a fire tore through a home on Truckee Street in Denver’s Green Valley Ranch neighborhood, killing five members of a Senegalese-American family, including two young children. Investigators quickly suspected arson—and soon, disturbing evidence began to surface: surveillance footage of masked figures fleeing the scene, a gas can, and signs of a fire set with intent. But as detectives pieced together the timeline and evidence, a deeper question emerged: why this house? This episode examines the early stages of the investigation into one of Denver’s most tragic and complex arson cases, following the work of homicide detectives Neil Baker and Ernest Sandoval as they confront a crime that shocked a city—and may not have been what it first appeared to be. Authorities probe fire at Pennsylvania governor's residence; no one injured
Harrisburg, Pa. – Police say they evacuated Gov. Josh Shapiro and his family from the official governor’s residence after someone set fire to the building. No one was injured. The fire broke out overnight on the first night of the Jewish holiday of Passover, which Shapiro and his family had celebrated at the governor's official residence in the state capital of Harrisburg. State Police said in a statement that, while the investigation was ongoing, they were “prepared to say at this time that this was an act of arson.” Police gave no other details about the cause. In a statement, Shapiro, viewed as a potential White House contender for the Democratic Party in 2028, said he and his family woke up at about 2 a.m. to bangs on the door from the Pennsylvania State Police after the fire broke out. The Harrisburg Bureau of Fire was called to the residence and, while they worked to put out the fire, police evacuated Shapiro and his family from the residence safely, Shapiro said. No one was injured and the fire was extinguished, authorities said. The fire caused a “significant amount of damage” to a portion of the residence, state police said. Shapiro and his family had been in a different part of the residence, police said. State Police said they were leading a multiagency investigation into the fire.
