📚És important establir com s'han de gestionar els documents per facilitar trobar-los, preservar-los i saber com i fins quan és imprescindible la seva conservació, evitant acumular documents de manera innecessària i optimitzar l'ús de l'espai d'emmagatzematge

Archives are the raw materials of history, allowing us to look at the past through contemporary eyes & see life in all its unpredictable, messy, joyful, scary variety. They help us challenge narratives, explore hidden histories & connect with being human.

Sir, In the receipt of the notice, I am surprised to think It has come a farthing less, instead of a farthing more. I would like for the employer to stand by a worker for an hour and see the amount of work a worker has to do in a garment in an hour to earn that, and then judge to see if she does not deserve the higher rate. I for one can speak from experience of 22 years in the Wholesale clothing trade and know what hard work means to be able to get just a living wage. I started at the age of thirteen getting half crown for the first six months, 3/- the next six months after that I was put under a machinist to learn Trousers and Boys’ knickers getting a third of what a machinist earned my wages averaged eight shillings a week in the busiest time and where no trade, go home. For four years I was a learner until there was a vacancy of a machine for me to go on. I was able then to earn good money for a few years until they started cutting down the prices owing to foreign competition, we were told, so we had to submit as it was our living, at last it was getting so bad, I had to leave as I had my widow mother to help support, this last five years and half and I could not afford to work for little. It includes the text "No people that holds dear its freedom of thought, speech, and assembly will submit to the suppression of these rights under a tattoo of nightstick blows or horses' hoofs! I emphatically protest the savage sentences imposed upon eighteen Anti-Nazi workers and students for peacefully demonstrating against the presence of the Hitler propaganda ship, the "Karlsruhe," in Boston Harbor. I urge the dropping of all charges and the immediate, unconditional release of all eighteen defendants." Late 1920s or early 1920s photograph of two women. The other (identity currently unknown) is standing behind her and resting one hand on the back of the chair, she is wearing a top hat, bow tie, waistcoat and frock coat.

Our #PopularItem is C18th-19th Sun Fire Office policy registers! Fire was a real threat to property so many took out insurance against it. They weren't just insuring buildings either, here's a 1793 policy for Gilbert Pidcock who has insured a rhino. Yes, you read that correctly... 🦏 📖 #archives30

The ship was captured at Toulon by British forces in 1793 and then it made its way to the UK. The document then somehow ended up in the hands of the Wedderburn family of Pearsie. So quite a journey. #ArchiveTravel #Archives30

This document has an interesting alleged story. It is a proof of nobility for Charles d'Autefort dated 1714. It is said that the parchment was used as the cover for a cartridge on a French ship during the revolutionary wars. #ArchiveTravel #Archives30

At present a lot of our volunteers are working on indexing our school admission registers up to 1924. We are hoping to have them all indexed and ready to go online later this year. (This is a detail from the Tay Street Admissions Register)

Even after his release, Pigott continued to correspond with the French scientific community, and our collection includes this letter sending thanks for their help bringing his work to the attention of the Emperor [Napoleon].

We don't have many hats in the Archives. This bicorn hat is part of the Guildry collection, and would have been worn by the Lord Dean of Guild. Until 1975 the LDG was a member of the Council committee. The Guildry is now a charitable organisation.
