baldur's gate 1 pretty fun so far. i'm playing on easy because fuck adnd 2e, my brain is too small and 5e-pilled for all its idiosyncrasies, but i'm enjoying the writing a lot so far. some of it has that very snappy modern cadence (hi imoen) but it still feels oldtimey enough to fit which is nice

so like adnd had this weird system called dual classing -- for demihumans it was called "multi-classing" and they simply gained xp in both/all of their classes at the same time like you'd expect but they did something weird with humans the theory was a character would sort of "retire" as their first class and start training in a second; the abilities of the first class were off limits during the retraining period consider a thief who decides to not merely dabble in magic but switch her whole career to magic user she becomes a 3 thief / 1 mage she keeps all her hit points from being a thief but that's it, she loses the thaco bonuses (no longer "fights like a thief") and can't use her thief skills (mages are supposed to think about these problems differently) if she does it anyway she doesn't get any xp for the encounter as a penalty UNTIL she gains enough xp as a mage to surpass her previous level as a thief, at which point her old class abilities are no longer off limits so a 3 thief / 4 mage can pick locks and fight half-decently and cast spells (although still not while wearing armor of course) and i was like wow that sounds like being trans

Between two monthly magazines (a magazine is something that got mailed to you to read like your phone bill) , monster listings lore that took up 3 pages sometimes and build a bear magic item lists..

My AD&D players are really taking command of their game now. After 2 sessions of mostly flailing from encounter to encounter with no prep, now they're recruiting henches, scouting areas, and carefully prepping battlefields before picking fights.

Fascinating to watch them adapt.
