In 1978, TSR built more than a dungeon. They built a Drow CITY with hierarchy, faith, & power struggles.

My new video looks at D1-D3 & why I think they changed D&D adventure design.

If you ran/played them, what do you remember most?

15 years ago today I started the Daddy Rolled A 1 blog (Feb 11, 2011).

That little blog eventually led to my old-school D&D supplement, YouTube channel, Patreon, and more. But it all started here.

My anniversary reflection: daddyrolleda1.blogspot.com/2026/02/15-y...

Thanks for following along.

Assassins & Monks: 2 of D&D's most controversial classes.

Do they even belong in the game?

My latest video discusses their history, including when they were removed, revised, and restored.

From a viewer:
"You started this channel at a time when D&D History seemed like a dead horse, and you proved otherwise. You have provided context and commentary with a neutrality to game versions that really has furthered my understanding of the game and the hobby."
Find out more in my latest video!
Early D&D didn’t treat rules as a complete system.
They were tools, examples, & procedures to be adapted by a referee.

My new video looks at why that assumption existed, and how it explains so many arguments we still have today.

"This video is so well done. Excellent! Thank you for the time, thought, and energy you put into all your videos."

Yes, many folks make house rules, and most folks know you *can*. But, WHY were the rules written assuming you would? And why do a lot of gamers recoil against the idea?

Have you ever wondered why mass combat and huge battles never seemed to "work" in D&D?

This video has the answer, tracking through decades of D&D's attempts to implement mass combat in various formats.

Check out the deep-dive in the first comment.
Early D&D was built for dungeon parties, not armies.

My new video looks at what D&D’s mass combat rules were actually trying to solve, why they rarely landed at the table, and what they reveal about the game’s early growing pains.

I need to go watch the vid but heck yeah. If you got a dragons horde in gold a d a nice house...why would you risk fighting the kaiju of the week?
Early Dungeons and Dragons did not expect characters to adventure forever.

The game had an answer for what came after success.
That's what my new deep-dive video explores.

So many folks asked in the comments for me to make this video explaining how D&D Tournament Scoring actually worked.

Here you go! Not only how it worked, but also, *WHY* it was created in the first place, and what problems from early D&D it was solving.
Tournament play forced D&D to explain itself.

When it had to be scored & compared, it had to declare what mattered & what didn’t.

My new video looks at tournament modules, scoring sheets, & judge notes to see what survived when D&D was put under pressure.

For the late-night crowd & folks who didn't see this yet, this is my tribute to Tim Kask, the first paid employee at TSR and 1 of the people who helped early D&D survive its chaotic early years.

It's not a biography. It’s about how editing, especially Tim’s editing, helped shape the future of D&D.
Early D&D didn’t just need designers.

It needed someone to decide what belonged.

A tribute to Tim Kask, and a look at editing as world-building in the earliest days of D&D.
