#Acyrthosiphon
We collected honeydew of both the black bean aphid (Aphis fabae) and the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum). Afterwards we let the honeydew age in open air for up to 72 hours. We sampled both the volatilome, bacterial community & oviposition preference of Episyrphus balteatus every 24 hours.

Roses are attacked by Macrosiphum rosae (the rose aphid); it doesn't attack lupin. Lupines are attacked by Macrosiphum albifrons (the lupin aphid), although rarely by the bluegreen aphid (Acyrthosiphon kondoi) and green peach aphid (Myzus persicae); only the last occasionally on roses.

The pea aphid is an amazing insect, a reminder of how strange and unusual the Universe is capable of being & how much we have to learn about the curious ways that life is possible.

When the weather turns cold, a change occurs:
wings appear on some females & some embryos become male.

This is the sexual phase, which produces 'diapaused' eggs that wait to hatch until the weather turns warmer.

I'm gathering that Bluesky is less interested in long science threads 🧪, but I need you all to know the majesty that is the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum:

It can 'feed' on sunlight;

gives birth to live, pregnant clone-babies;

needs to be bacterially infected to survive.
