#AES2021
Oldies but goodies - memories from #AES2021 as we’re all traveling to #AES2024. Leftovers from that other blue site that is now just an unpleasant shell of its former glorious self, but still contains relevant tidbits.
Can’t wait to catch up with everyone!

One benefit of living in Chicago, a city that hosts conferences, is that you get to catch up with friends after years. @DrAlShami @HenryFordNeuro #AES2021

A few great conferences coming up.

#Neurotwitter #Medtwitter where do you stay during a conference?

P.S. As an attending, rates at any conference hotel still feel ridiculously high

Katherine Giesy at #JMIH2021 #AES2021 : Nurse sharks are commonly assumed to be extremely resilient to catch and release capture stress, but this seems to be only true of adults, not juveniles which are commonly caught by land-based anglers. @UMiamiRSMAS @Field_School @dr_catmac

Only six episodes out of over 200 mentioned anything specific and actionable about how their massive audience can help sharks.

Two of the most featured filming locations were South Africa and the Bahamas, yet experts featured in Shark Week shows are overwhelmingly white and often from far away.

78.4% of featured experts on Shark Week shows were men, and 93.1% were white. There are many women and people of color in the field, and at a certain point it’s not an accident that Shark Week almost never gives them opportunities.

1/4 of featured “experts” in Shark Week shows have 0 peer reviewed publications. One guy who is not a scientist and regularly says nonsensically wrong things has been featured in 43 Shark Week shows, 3 of the most-featured experts have no pubs

The research methods most featured on Shark Week are not the research methods most commonly used by scientists

The shark species featured most often in Shark Week shows aren’t the most studied species or the most threatened species

About half of all Shark Week shows are ostensibly about science or Shark behavior, but they often use atypical “research methods” bordering on animal abuse that real scientists would never use, to answer ridiculous “research questions”

Shark Week actively lies to both viewers and scientists, and has a huge diversity problem in terms of featured experts - @WhitenackLab #JMIH2021 #Aes2021

“we watched 201 episodes of Shark Week so you don’t have to.” - @WhitenackLab #JMIH2021 #Aes2021

Shark Week has a viewership of millions, resulting in huge temporary spikes of public interest in sharks, shark science, and shark conservation. But what they say matters.

#AES2021 @fishtritionist is presenting about captive breeding as a tool for shark conservation! This isn’t often done for marine species, but a team of aquariums are trying a pilot program. It was covered in Science recently...

Among humans who appeared in more than 5 episodes of Shark Week, there were more guys named Mike who were not scientists than there were women.

Shark Week is marine biology’s biggest stage, and they can and must do better. Representation matters.

#JMIH2021 #AES2021 friends, I hope you’ll stop by today’s @ElasmoSociety conservation and management session, which includes a talk by me about research priorities for threatened and exploited sharks and their relatives in US waters.

Today’s #AES2021 talks were the candidates for Gruber award for best student research. Some really excellent talks, congrats to the presenters!

After day one of virtual #AES2021 , Cheston Peterson of @FSUMarineLab is in the lead of the “how many times do you mention sandbar sharks in your talk” contest, which is totally a real thing
