Excerpt from Chapter 9 of Overcover: The centre of weight on the horse shifted, bringing Jiang Cheng back to real life and the man in front of him. Gone was Huaisang’s surety and grace of a shichen ago. Instead, the man’s shoulders were slumped, his head leaned forwards, further and further— “Nie Huaisang!” Jiang Cheng hissed, digging his elbows tighter into the man’s waist. It was all he could do at that moment, but it seemed to work, as Huaisang’s frame stiffened and he pushed himself back up again. The man had looked exhausted as he walked out of the Unclean Realm. And of course he was. No matter who you were, unleashing that amount of spiritual power was no small feat. Huaisang’s weight swayed forward again, and he reached forwards for the horse’s neck. His fingers closed around bits of its mane like they had found a lifeline. Though the ride was bumpy and their pace had them jolting up and down, Jiang Cheng did not miss the shaking of his hands. “Nie Huaisang!” he barked out. “Don’t you dare let go of the horse! You think I’m going to hold you?”

His body was there, still turned half-towards, half-away from Jiang Cheng, but his voice sounded a million li away. “My brother only had my best interests in heart, but I spurned him like a spoiled child. No matter. It doesn’t seem like young Sect Leader Jin is repeating my mistakes with you.”

Not a minute later did Lan Wangji excuse himself to go off and train, with Huaisang — surprisingly — joining him. It was just Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng in the room now. Jiang Cheng itched to throw himself into something productive, but there really was nothing to do except wait for Ouyang Zizhen to wake up. Wei Wuxian cleared his throat. “Jiang Cheng… want to go for a drink?” Jiang Cheng frowned. “In the midmorning?” “And?” Wei Wuxian countered. “Do you have anything better to do?” Jiang Cheng… didn’t.

Excerpt from Chapter 11 of Overcover: “Nie Huaisang!” Jiang Cheng exclaimed. He raised one arm to stop Huaisang, but Huaisang blocked him with his fan, with a snap of his wrist, quick as a snake strike. It was a surprisingly strong strike, infused with erratic, jumping energy, and the spot where Huaisang’s fan hit his arm tingled. Zidian’s electricity sputtered, the light flickering for a few moments before going out completely. Jiang Cheng could do nothing but cradle his arm with his other hand. “Jiang Wanyin, let me finish!” Nie Huaisang retorted without even looking back at him. He looked from Wei Wuxian to Lan Wangji. “Maybe neither of you understand. I didn’t either, once upon a time. Until I had to.” He lowered his gaze momentarily. When he looked back up at them, his eyes were cold. “Until I became Sect Leader, I didn’t know what I was in for.” Huaisang’s voice was like ice. “But this man? He has known his entire life.”

It was supposed to remain there until they found their ends in the distant future. It was supposed to be an everlasting presence even in the darkest of times. It wasn’t supposed to be cut short by his own hands. Not like this. Not for duty. Anaxa tugs at Mydei’s belt to have their bodies pressed flush together, swallowing the groan he’s rewarded with. Because this is /his/. His to treasure, his to break. His to remember even when Mydei’s story will one day only be part of tales. The breathless sound of his name from Mydei’s lips is etched into his soul, and it is /his/, even as his throat clogs in ways he won’t admit.

It would have been too much for Nie Huaisang to have picked this fan on purpose back when he fled the Unclean Realm, but at the same time, Jiang Cheng wouldn’t put it past him. He was willing to bet money that Yunmeng’s experts wouldn’t pale to this Xia Delong. But if Nie Huaisang was going to be so stubborn about it, then hey, maybe he was onto something. And they needed all the advantages they could get. “Fine,” he said. “I’ll send someone. It’s too risky to go ourselves.” “On the contrary,” Nie Huaisang replied. “It’s least risky to go ourselves. At least, I have to go. I know the place best, all its little nooks and crannies. And if you want something done well, it’s best to do it yourself. Don’t you agree, Jiang-xiong?” He held Jiang Cheng’s gaze with his own, and Jiang Cheng could not believe that he, of all people, had just dared to say that to him . The next morning was beautiful. Sunlight streamed in from the windows, casting the gold decor in a spectacularly warm glow. Jiang Cheng took his time getting ready for the day. He opened the door to his back gardens and Peachey immediately bounded into his arms, Lili following serenely after. Two raps came on his main doors, most probably the servants with his morning meal. As Jiang Cheng ruffled the adorable tuft of fur on Peachey’s head, he called out, “I’ll take breakfast later in the private hall.” But the raps came again. Peachey yipped, and Jiang Cheng frowned. Jin Ling’s servants were normally quite sharp and knew not to disturb him when he didn’t need their services. “Jiang Cheng!” Wei Wuxian’s voice came from outside. Oh. “Jiang Cheng! It’s me. Can you… um… send your dogs away for a moment… I have a few things I want to say to you……”

Capable of the greatest kindnesses and the most heinous deeds, both extremes so far apart that you couldn’t be sure which one was real. He thought back to Lan Xichen’s words at Meishan, questioning which Huaisang was the real one. And then back to the bashful boy he had known in Gusu, who would have been content to be left to his own devices, writing novels and painting birds. “Someone in my position—” Huaisang began. “What happened to—” Jiang Cheng blurted out.
