It was a portrait of our father’s mother, the Queen Gwynvir, in her last years. I’d never met her – she’d been dead for several hundred years before I’d been born – and so I knew only what I’d read of her in history texts, and what my father had shared of her in passing. She’d been a visionary, a kind but fierce spirit, pledging her Troth to the Pact and binding Eilyris into alliance with mortals and vampires. She and my grandfather, whose portrait hung beside hers, had believed our races could protect each other, could have peace. And now, here I stood, bruised, branded, praying just to make it out alive.
