While COP30 opens across the Atlantic in Belém, Brazil, a Greenpeace campaigner walked across Madrid's skyline on Monday between two hotels at the emblematic Plaza de España, on a highline rope 30 meters above the ground, bearing the slogan 'The planet, on the tightrope' as part of a Greenpeace campaign. The activist traversed the 55 meters between the Riu Plaza España and the Barceló Torre de Madrid. 'With this action, we want to announce the start of the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30). A summit arriving at a critical moment for global climate action: ten years after the Paris Agreement,' the NGO said in a statement. The meeting has two notable absences—U.S. President Donald Trump and China's Xi Jinping. Greenpeace stresses that the commitments made 'flounder, wobble, or risk falling off the agenda.' The NGO also denounced that, in 2025, several events threaten the advances achieved after decades of effort by civil society movements, governments, and international organizations. 'Walking on the tightrope symbolizes the urgency to move forward firmly and keep taking steps in the right direction,' they said, while urging the Spanish government to lead a 'bold and ambitious' stance at COP.

Climate change - from CO₂ to crisis. It starts with accumulation of greenhouse gas emissions but leads to multiple global repercussions. Climate change isn’t a distant threat — it’s a systemic chain reaction already in motion & steadily increasing in severity.
