It is inconceivable to me that a university that has a program called GENDER AND SOCIAL JUSTICE is happy to attach its name to this kind of epistemological violence.
Text of article continued: These articles are unacceptable: The whole project was funded by and completed in partnership with the SEGM hate group. Scholars have published critical responses to the “methodologic flaws, and erroneous assumptions” in this SEGM-funded research. Nevertheless, these papers can be cited to undermine Canada’s legal protections for trans youth. This is not about academic disagreement or freedom of inquiry. SEGM’s views are scientifically discredited and condemned by every reputable medical association in Canada and the U.S. Gender-affirming care is effective and supported by a swath of organizations, from the Greater Hamilton Health Network, to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO), the Canadian Medical Association, to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Authoring hate group-funded research to push an ideological agenda under the guise of “evidence-based research” is the antithesis of high quality and ethical science. As the SPLC observes, SEGM is part of the continuation of eugenicist projects of forced sterilization in the name of protecting whiteness from “deviant” sexualities and gender identities. We are calling on McMaster University to practise what it preaches: It cannot continue to hypocritically post Pride statements or fly the rainbow flag while profiting from a partnership with an anti-LGBTQ-plus group. We are calling for academic integrity and basic research ethics. McMaster’s faculty of health sciences must issue a public statement identifying SEGM as a hate group, push for its researchers to terminate its contract with SEGM and call for the research to be retracted. This is not without precedent — when similar pseudo-science was uncovered at Toronto’s Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), Dr. Kenneth Zucker’s clinic was shut down following an external review, and major journals have since retracted anti-trans publications for methodological bias and harm. My wonderful colleagues are getting a lot of shit for this piece they co-authored calling out McMaster University for partnering with a recognized anti-trans hate group—a partnership whose work was cited by Clarence Thomas in the recent despicable ruling on trans medical care.
Text of article: Pride parades commemorate the 1969 Stonewall riots, a rebellion against police harassment of queer and trans people. The patrons of the Stonewall Inn, many of them trans women and sex workers of colour, were pathologized. Homosexuality and “transsexualism” were mental illnesses doctors sought to “cure.” The medical “treatments” on offer — forced sterilization and conversion therapy — were torture. We know better now. Or at least, we should. At McMaster University, history is repeating itself: the department of health research methods, evidence, and impact (HEI) has partnered with an anti-LGBTQ-plus group. The so-called “Society for Evidence-Based Gender Medicine” a.k.a. “SEGM” — a gross misnomer — is designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). The SPLC is a leading civil rights organization that tracks and reports on U.S. hate groups, renowned for suing the Ku Klux Klan and bankrupting other white supremacist organizations. In recent years, the SPLC has expanded its “Klanwatch” investigations to other hate groups. In 2023, it identified SEGM as the “hub” of the anti-LGBTQ-plus pseudo-science network, with ties to racist “anti-woke,” creationist, anti-abortion and climate-denial movements throughout Canada and the U.S. SEGM opposes basic health care for trans people, promotes discredited “conversion therapy,” commissions pseudo-science reports and makes legal submissions to justify bans on gender-affirming care throughout the U.S. Its goal is not academic inquiry — it is to erase trans people from public life by denying them modern medical care, and McMaster is in their employ. We write this as medical professionals and social scientists with expertise in health policy, the role of evidence in policy making, and international human rights. In this one instance, I am making an exception, because I hope readers will be interested in considering how the kind of reading I practice and advocate here, with its resistance to formal resolution, relates to that urged by Anna Kornbluh in Immediacy; or, the Style of Too Late Capitalism (Verso, 2023), which "strives to achieve critique's promise for affirmative synthesis" (22). I think this is an important question, because whether we're blowing things open or nailing them down, when Anna says Get in, loser, we're going theorizing, I get in.
