ZSL's SPOTT assesses corporate disclosure of environmental, social and governance (ESG) best practice in the palm oil, timber and pulp, and natural rubber industries
These samples will be used in lab testing and spatial modelling to trace timber back to its origin – down to a subnational level.

This helps companies and regulators meet due diligence requirements under #EUDR and other laws.

Lots of palm oil, forestry and rubber companies operate in orangutan habitat.

But results show weak corporate transparency on forest protection and biodiversity.

Once finalised, these tools will help tackle deforestation, protect biodiversity, strengthen legal compliance, and support communities and climate goals.

Operators and local communities are helping shape the tools to ensure they’re practical, fair and effective!

The tools being tested include a new Operational Guide and a Monitoring and Evaluation grid, both designed to strengthen the way forestry activities are assessed, implemented and audited.

To stay credible, the taxonomy must be science-based and inclusive. We call for:

✔ Stronger DNSH/MSS criteria
✔ Independent evaluators
✔ Regular public reviews
✔ Clear mitigation disclosures

It must guide a real transition - not legitimise #greenwashing.

At a public seminar, @zslofficial.bsky.social and partners flagged risks:

🔴 Weak Do No Significant Harm (DNSH) & Minimum Social Safeguards (MSS)

🔴 Activities qualifying as ‘green’ despite environmental harm

🔴 Missing links to #biodiversity, supply chains & #climate adaptation

To stay viable and climate-resilient, rubber companies must reduce emissions, protect forests and increase transparency.

In 2024, extreme heat and floods hit key producers like Thailand & China — reducing rubber yields and driving prices to a 13-year high.

The #ClimateCrisis isn’t coming — it’s already disrupting supply chains.

This slow progress is deeply concerning as @ipcc.bsky.social urges action to limit global temperature rise to 1.5–2°C 🌡️

The window to align with climate goals is closing fast.

Targets to cut #GHG emissions must be publicly disclosed and:

✅ Cover all natural rubber operations
✅ Include at least Scope 1 & 2 emissions
✅ Specify a baseline, reduction % & timeline

Without these, it's hard to measure progress or hold companies accountable.
