These samples will be used in lab testing and spatial modelling to trace timber back to its origin – down to a subnational level.

This helps companies and regulators meet due diligence requirements under #EUDR and other laws.

Lots of palm oil, forestry and rubber companies operate in orangutan habitat.

But results show weak corporate transparency on forest protection and biodiversity.

Borneo & Sumatra’s rainforests are the last strongholds for wild orangutans.

Unsustainable agriculture and logging replace fruit-rich forests with monocultures where orangutans can’t survive.

Last year’s SPOTT Timber & Pulp Assessment found persistent transparency gaps, with companies scoring just 24% on average.

With growing pressure from buyers, investors and regulations, will the sector improve?

The 2025 update lands in September.

Once finalised, these tools will help tackle deforestation, protect biodiversity, strengthen legal compliance, and support communities and climate goals.

Operators and local communities are helping shape the tools to ensure they’re practical, fair and effective!

The tools being tested include a new Operational Guide and a Monitoring and Evaluation grid, both designed to strengthen the way forestry activities are assessed, implemented and audited.

This SPOTT map shades countries based on the average transparency scores of timber and pulp companies operating there. Darker = stronger disclosure.

Some regions lead. Others lag - even in high-risk areas.

Why do you think that is?

To stay credible, the taxonomy must be science-based and inclusive. We call for:

✔ Stronger DNSH/MSS criteria
✔ Independent evaluators
✔ Regular public reviews
✔ Clear mitigation disclosures

It must guide a real transition - not legitimise #greenwashing.

At a public seminar, @zslofficial.bsky.social and partners flagged risks:

🔴 Weak Do No Significant Harm (DNSH) & Minimum Social Safeguards (MSS)

🔴 Activities qualifying as ‘green’ despite environmental harm

🔴 Missing links to #biodiversity, supply chains & #climate adaptation

Thailand Taxonomy 2.0 is a critical step in aligning national economic activities with #sustainability goals.

It now also covers agriculture, construction, manufacturing & waste. What do CSOs have to say about this?

In 2024, extreme heat and floods hit key producers like Thailand & China — reducing rubber yields and driving prices to a 13-year high.

The #ClimateCrisis isn’t coming — it’s already disrupting supply chains.

This slow progress is deeply concerning as @ipcc.bsky.social urges action to limit global temperature rise to 1.5–2°C 🌡️

The window to align with climate goals is closing fast.

Targets to cut #GHG emissions must be publicly disclosed and:

✅ Cover all natural rubber operations
✅ Include at least Scope 1 & 2 emissions
✅ Specify a baseline, reduction % & timeline

Without these, it's hard to measure progress or hold companies accountable.

Fewer than half of SPOTT-assessed #NaturalRubber companies disclose clear, time-bound targets to cut #GreenhouseGas emissions 🌏🔥

In 2025, just 14 of 30 companies published commitments — up slightly from 12 in 2024.

Average SPOTT scores – GPSNR vs. non-members:
🟢 GPSNR members: 56.5%
🟢 Non-members: 27.1%

Why?
GPSNR membership requires public disclosure of a #sustainability policy aligned to its framework. Companies that don't comply risk expulsion.

April 11, 2025 at 10:48 AM
60% of SPOTT-assessed #NaturalRubber companies are Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR) members — and they score more than twice as high on average for their public #ESG disclosure 🔍

Only 4 out of 20 #NaturalRubber processors (20%) report they can trace 100% of their rubber supply to a sub-national level 🌏

Further downstream, just 1 out of 20 (5%) companies buying from processors report the same.
