In 2008, Jim Miller, a Dakota veteran, was called to start a yearly winter horse ride from current reservations back to Minnesota as an act of healing and remembrance.

There are ways to create healing by remembering the past, acting in the present, and creating a better future.

Museums are great places for learning but they should have artifacts allowed by the communities from which they came and curated with the knowledge of the descendants.

But most museums and or delayed, put up excuses, questioned tribal origin or flat out refused to return these items and ancestors despite the law.

As our ancestors and artifacts are returned, ceremony is held to allow for proper closure.

The results were the same. Artifacts and our ancestors were removed to museums and storage and labs without the consultation or approval of Tribes

NAGPRA came about to rectify this - to require repatriation of these artifacts and our ancestors.

Let's not let them take us backwards to authoritarian rule.

Some state they are an ally and supporter, but the fact that we can seriously entertain this colonial and unfair doctrine shows we are either ignorant or unwilling to make change.
