I do genuinely believe that the way entertainment journalists wrote opinion pieces about sexualized characters in the 2010s did have a strong impact on the waves of internet censorship today. It's not that conservative outlooks needed an excuse, but that it conditioned the left to not defend sex.

...at one point it was understood that the internet was not safe. That anyone can use it, and you should exercise caution and care to protect yourself online. We now do anything we can to avoid exercising any amount of personal responsibility for what we see or share online.
