Rudyard Kipling's Dane-geld poem puts it in particularly elegant language.

Also this, holy shit. I mean yeah people can afford to move ONCE. But outside the top 10% within wealthy nations, that's it. You lose your house and get partial/no insurance cover, you are not affluent any more.

We collated two bottles of ibuprofen that are the same dose but, uh, different pill design.

So true, we are all still riding horses and burning wood. The Industrial Revolution never happened and nobody ever used coal. It's never happened before therefore it can never happen.
