I read things and write things (and teach humans how to read and write things). I watch movies and sometimes I say smart stuff.

I hate writing bios. I love eating snacks and taking naps.
Other than Orphan Black, I’m not sure I’ve ever loved a show as thoroughly as I love Yellowjackets. #ShowsIWishWereAlsoNovelsSoICouldReadThemToo

In case anyone was wonder, 4 weeks of classes + 2 snow days + getting sick enough to cancel classes was what it took to kill that giant streak of super-productive discipline I had going. It was good while it lasted. I’m not all the way back to my normal level of procrastination yet. Yet. ;)

Things I am excited about <3
Happy Valentine’s Day! Here’s an audiobook excerpt from THE RIVER HAS ROOTS, narrated by Gem Carmella, with my sister & me singing “Tarweedeh Shmaali,” or “The Lovers’ Hymn,” in the background.

I didn’t have a wide emo range like my hubs (probably because we were both a little too old), but listening to From Under The Cork Tree confirms that Fall Out Boy was most def one of my bands. My voice missed these clever lines. Now I want to write instead of grade. #OhWell

My husband is making me bacon, eggs, and fresh cookies while singing (and presumably dancing to) “All That Jazz.”

I could not have chosen better.

Maybe on Saturdays I share something I love. Here’s a poem.

It’s #FridayReads time and we need books right now. Smart books. Rebellious books. Queer books. Bilingual books. Let’s go. Repost this and let us know what to repost for you. Here, have an angry horror/crime hybrid about friendship, revenge, & colonialism.

Writing a chapter for our OER textbook about academic integrity and plagiarism (including AI & academia) while also taking short breaks to add more to whatever this fucked up horror story is I started writing this morning. This is your comp professor maintaining creative balance and her own voice.

Random thing I miss because I am disabled: playing laser tag.

As a folklorist I keep a pretty wary eye on any nostalgia I ever feel but I feel like laser tag with my friends in high school was legit wonderful. I miss that simple joy.

If I was able bodied, I’d be dragging everyone to laser tag.

Also in class we’re talking about the power of language and the students are having great convos (real time and in comments on shared annotations). Today I told them they are brilliant and I love them. I’m not just gassing them up. They get it and make me feel hopeful. They give a shit.

“I Believe In A Thing Called Love” came on as I pulled into my neighborhood so I had to wait in the car for it to finish before I came into the house. There are just some rules in the universe that are nonnegotiable.

I didn’t know this existed. Now I am super fucking weepy. Good people doing good things.
The Queer Liberation Library is an online US nonprofit library registered with Libby! Anyone in America can get a card through them and they have a decent selection if you enjoy LGBTQ+ history and stories!

I’m going to add that in a real ethic of love, it’s kindness to hold people accountable. Don’t take those words as a “say something nice or don’t speak.” Take them as “do these words promote goodness?” Calling bullshit is an act of love. Call out hate. Don’t let it hide.

Some mornings we all sleep in to a reasonable time. Some mornings I just wake up earlier than everyone. Some mornings I am awoken by a 95 pound boxer kicking me directly in the face with his back paw cause he’s having exciting dreams. Life is about balance?

We’re all angry and worried and maybe some don’t feel like creating or no longer feel like it matters, but keep writing, painting, dancing, making music, making art. Not doing the things that bring you joy—not making art—doesn’t help. Do what you love harder than ever.

It’s a Year Zero kind of day. (And then maybe some Rusted Root or something that feels like sunshine amid the dystopia.)

Today I made things for this week’s classes, wrote a rec for a student, made things for friends, and am (hopefully) about to finish The Secret of Ventriloquism before maybe writing some stuff and eating a meal involving mashed potatoes. Today was a good day. Despite the wash that is still undone.
