These 3 books have been revelatory for me this year, as far as thinking about how to address the current state of things using the blueprints provided by our ancestors.

None of this is new. We don’t have to panic & build everything from scratch.

You picking up what I’m putting down?

I’m late, but I’m finishing up my last book for #SpookySeason2025 this week: Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s ‘The Bewitching.’

Wonderful use of mystery and tension to drive the plot forward. I love when authors can pull off multiple POVs and timelines like this.

More photos from our time in the yard this morning.
💧 Obsessed with the way dew drops perfectly decorate the edges of my cabbage leaves.
🐛 My Mojo baby & I relocated a tiny caterpillar.
🥕 My carrot tops are serving verdant lushness. #StiffWhere? 😋

I don’t remember ever having this many peppers on one plant this late in the year. 😲
Every season is different. Every plant is different. There’s always a surprise when working with nature.

Took little man to the Asian Night Market tonight. Saw the Pokemon art exhibit, dancers, sumo wrestlers, & lots of cool items for sale.

Big crowds. I could stay in the house for the rest of the weekend. But I try to get him outside even though I’m a hermitess.

6. Hazel Scott

A gorgeous virtuoso who used her art to uplift, not just entertain. The system tried to erase her legacy. She reminds me that culture is not frivolous; it can be a tool against white supremacy.

5. Lucy Carmichael

Mom goals. Raised a confident little genius. Threw light shade at those other parents when necessary.

4. Ida B. Wells

What can I say? She was steadfast, brilliant, enterprising. Didn't take mess from white folks or men. Used the power of her words to fight for her people.

3. The titular character from Monica Furlong's book Juniper. Because Leo & Diane Dillon were my favorite illustrators as a child, & some witchiness & whimsy can serve you well even in serious times.

2. Pam Echols

This is a photo of Pam Echols clawing the face of a cop at a protest in Milwaukee in 1967. Enough said.

1. Cree Summer

Cree has been dropping so much knowledge about aging, self-love, and motherhood, all while being hilarious and fly. I want to be like her when I grow up.

I added Eden Royce’s Psychopomp and Circumstance to my #SpookySeason2025 reading list.

Listening to Bahni Turpin’s impeccable narration for the audiobook.

I love the world the author created here.

Finally got a Trill Burger at an event today.
It was good. But in no rush to wait in line for another one.

Ok maybe there won’t be outside shenanigans because apparently we’re supposed to get a crap ton of rain this weekend.

I’m about to be stuck inside with a very energetic child. 😆 Y’all pray for my nerves.
And pray for my veggie garden, too. 😬

I finished “The Possession of Alba Díaz,” and I just want @isabelcanas.bsky.social to know that her take on the possession/exorcism subgenre is perfect. I won’t give spoilers, but the plot resolution is so satisfying.

Also, the cover is gorgeous. Get into it.

The mushrooms in my raised bed flattened out! This whole time I thought the round and flat ones were different kinds. 😆 Now I know it’s the same kind at different stages of growth. Never paid much attention to them before.

Summer never knows when to take her overzealous ass home. It is Autumn’s turn! Sheesh!
At least tomorrow will be cooler.

I don’t know much about fungi, but it was cool seeing these big ass mushrooms in the raised bed this morning. 🍄‍🟫 #ZodiGardens #GardenSky 🌱 #BackyardGarden #UrbanGardening #BlackUrbanGardeners

This movie introduced me to one of my favorite actresses, Vonetta McGee. As a kid, I was entranced by her portrayal of Princess Luva Mamuwalde / Tina Williams.

She was drop dead gorgeous.
October 20, 2025 at 1:17 AM
It has come to my attention that some so-called horror fans are not familiar with the Mamuwalde surname. 😲
Tsk tsk!
As we are in the middle of #SpookySeason, & I suggest you watch Blacula (1972), featuring William Marshall as Blacula / Prince Mamuwalde. #VampSky #HorrorSky

🥬 My cabbages are growing nicely. I experimented with some different soils in the grow bags. This one is getting full after recovering from caterpillars.

🥕 My handful of grand nantes carrots seem ok, but who knows until harvest?

🫑 No idea why these sweet peppers are so tiny LOL.

Y’all! This brightened my weekend so much. I haven’t had time to scout books for my #LittleFreeLibrary lately. But some kind soul from Jack & Jill left a stack with adorable bookmarks for me. This was incredibly sweet. I know the neighborhood kids will appreciate it. #LFL #BookLove #BlackBookSky
